How to Tow With a BMW X3

1. Look up the BMW's towing limitations in the owner's manual. This will be listed as the maximum towing capacity. Look on the trailer's data plate for its gross trailer weight. The towing capacity of the X3 must be more than the total mass of the trailer.
2. Reverse the X3 up to the trailer tongue until they align. Lower the trailer's receiver onto the vehicle's hitch. Lock the latch in place with a hitch pin.
3. Secure the trailer's chains to the vehicle by crossing them under the receiver. This will catch the trailer's tongue in the event it becomes detached from the vehicle.
4. Join the trailer's electrical connector to the vehicle's receiver. Have a friend stand behind the trailer while you turn on the marker lights, signals and press the brakes. Have them confirm that the lighting systems are responding as required.
5. Walk around the trailer and vehicle checking all of the connections. Look closely at the vehicle and trailer for its road worthiness.
6. Drive much slower than you would normally because the weight of the trailer will affect your braking and cornering.
7. Corner wider around turns, while staying inside your lane, to compensate for the trailer's tendency to cut the inside of the corner.
