How to Replace the Fuel Filter in a 2001 BMW 330xi
1. Disconnect the battery by removing the negative terminal. This is the black cable. Lift the driver's side of the car with a floor jack and lower it onto a jack stand. You can also drive the car onto ramps to access the fuel filter.
2. Locate the metal shield that is under the car, on the driver's side and in front of the gas tank. Remove the bolts that hold the shield on with a socket and a ratchet. Remove the shield and set it aside.
3. Place a pair of locking pliers on the fuel lines on each side of the fuel filter so the fuel line is squeezed together, which will prevent the fuel from spilling out when the lines are removed from the filter.
4. Remove the filter from its bracket. The bracket has a bolt that connects the bracket to the filter. Use a screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps that hold the fuel lines to the filter. Pull the fuel lines off of the filter. Remove the filter and discard it.
5. Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one. Ensure that the arrow on the filter is facing towards the front of the BMW. Tighten the bolt that holds the bracket on, then tighten the hose clamps. Remove the locking pliers.
6. Reinstall the shield. Lower the vehicle back to the ground. Reconnect the battery. Turn the car ignition on and off a couple of times without starting the engine, then turn the key to the 'On' position and start the engine.
