DIY: Rear Brakes on an Audi S4

1. Park the S4 on a level, flat surface. Use a tire iron to loosen the lug nuts that hold the rear wheels on. Lift the back of the car with a jack and lower it onto jack stands placed under the car at the proper places.
2. Finish removing the lug nuts and the wheels. Set the wheels out of the way. Remove the brake caliper spring clip on the outside of the caliper with a pair of pliers. Loosen and remove the caliper bolts located at the top and bottom of the brake caliper facing the wheel well.
3. Slide the caliper off the brake rotor. Support the brake rotor by tying it to a nearby suspension piece, so there is no weight on the soft brake line.
4. Remove the brake pads from the caliper and the caliper carrier. Disconnect the line for the brake wear sensor. Remove the bolts that hold the brake caliper carrier to the car. Set the carrier aside. Remove the brake rotor set screw, located in the face of the rotor. Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
5. Clean the area where the rotor mounts to the hub. Slide the new rotor onto the hub. Now is a good time to upgrade to cross-drilled rotors, which provide superior cooling. Install the rotor set screw. Bolt the caliper carrier back on.
6. Open the lid to the brake fluid reservoir located in the engine bay. Using a syringe, remove about ½-inch of the brake fluid. Place the Audi brake caliper tool over the piston in the caliper. The tool has metal dowels that fit into holes on the piston. Turn the tool so that it retracts and turns the piston into the caliper to make room for the new, thicker brake pads.
7. Install the new brake pads. Slide the caliper back over the new rotor. Install and tighten the caliper bolts. Connect the brake wear sensor, ensuring it is routed correctly. Reinstall the brake caliper clips. Repeat for the other side. Place the wheels back on the car and lower it. Fill the brake fluid reservoir with fresh brake fluid. Pump the brakes until the brake pedal feels firm again.

How to Troubleshoot a 2003 Audi Allroad Quattro

1. Make sure your Quattro is able to start and run normally. A redesign in 2003 changed the fuel-pump components. Unfortunately, this change was for the worse. The fuel pump may fail prematurely. This problem is covered under a factory recall, and the dealership will replace this item at no charge to you.
2. Check for low oil pressure. Some Quattros in 2003 may experience low oil pressure. Unfortunately, this is due to the turbocharger setup from the factory. The turbocharger gets warm and may cause oil in the engine to coagulate and form sludge in critical areas. This may interfere with the oil pickup in the crankcase, which, in turn, can affect lubrication of critical engine components. There is no known recall for this issue; however, if the Quattro is experiencing low oil pressure, have the turbocharger system checked and serviced immediately by an Audi dealership.
3. Check for oil leaks on the seals and gaskets of the camshaft adjusters if you have a 3.0-liter engine on your Audi. Some Quattros were fitted with an optional 3.0-liter engine. The seals and gaskets on the camshaft adjusters may prematurely fail. Although this is not covered by a factory recall, have this problem serviced immediately by an Audi dealership.

How to Add R134 to a BMW

1. Secure the low-side service hose onto your container of R134a. Keep the valve closed on the service hose.
2. Locate the low-side quick disconnect valve on the accumulator hose. Again, the valve measures 13mm and connects to the silver hose extending from the accumulator. On most BMWs, the accumulator is on the passenger side and it is a silver tube with two hoses coming out of it. One side is the low-side hose and the second is the high-side hose. The valve is on the low-side hose.
3. Remove the cap from the hose and press the other end of the service hose onto the low-size valve. It is a quick disconnect valve so the hose will snap on just by pressing it onto the valve.
4. Turn on your BMW and turn on the air conditioner. Open the valve on the service hose and charge the air conditioner until the pressure gauge on the service hose reaches between 35psi and 40psi.
5. Turn off your BMW and disconnect the service hose from the low-side valve. Place the cap on the valve to complete the job.

How to Troubleshoot a 1992 325I BMW Transmission

1. Start the engine and let it run for about 15 minutes.
2. Open the hood and pull the looped handle in the back of the engine all the way out. This is the transmission dipstick.
3. Examine the fluid. It should be red in color. If it is reddish-brown, or smells burnt, then you will need to have the transmission fluid changed and your transmission checked for any internal damage.
4. Check the fluid level. Examine the end of the dipstick. The fluid level should be between the upper and lower marks on the end of the dipstick. If it isn't, you'll need to add more transmission fluid until the fluid levels are adequate.
5. Put the car into gear. If it grinds or is hard going into gear, you will need to have the transmission serviced. Grinding gears can indicate chipped teeth on the gears. However, it is more likely that the synchronizers are damaged.

How to Upgrade My Volkswagen Passat

1. Lower the suspension and install performance shocks. Like most vehicles, when the Passat leaves the factory, it has an undesirable ride height. Install lowering springs from Eibach matched with a set of performance shocks. Your Passat will look far better and will also handle better. Eibach also offers a front anti-roll bar for the B5-generation Passat.
2. Replace the stock wheels. Once you have lowered the suspension, the next logical step is to install a larger diameter set of wheels and tires. Most specialty tire retailers will have a large selection of wheel and tires packages for the Passat. For a German make, like the Passat, a set of BBS wheels look great. Lighter wheels will reduce the unsprung weight of your VW's suspension, and wider, softer compound tires will give it more grip in the corners.
3. Tune the motor for more power. The Passat's 1.8T turbocharged engine, in particular, takes well to modifications. Euro Sport Tuning offers a full array of engine upgrades, including reprogrammed ECUs (Engine Control Units) that add more horsepower and increase the engine's redline, intercoolers for turbocharged engines and free flow exhaust systems. (See Resources 1)
4. Upgrade the braking. More power means that your Passat can also use some extra braking. Start by installing a set of cross-drilled rotors, which help dissipate heat and reduce brake fade during aggressive and repeated braking. Continue the improvements in this area by installing brake pads made from performance-oriented pad material and braided steel brake lines for a firmer brake pedal feel.
5. Replace the original seats with aftermarket bucket seats from Recaro. With your Passat accelerating, braking and cornering much quicker now, deeper bucket seats will only add to the experience, ensuring that driver and passenger stay firmly in place during sporty driving.
6. Upgrade the exterior with better lighting and ground effect. There are not a huge number of choices when it comes to upgrading the exterior of your Passat, so you can keep it simple by installing PIAA headlight and fog light bulbs and a pair of headlight eyebrows. (See Resources 1) Andy's Auto Sport offers a few body kits for the Passat if you want to make the exterior look even more unusual. (See Resources 3) However, the Passat is a handsome, well-styled car in original form and looks best with a minimum of external aesthetic changes.

How to Replace the Belts on a BMW 325i

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. The negative cable is black.
2. Remove the bolts holding the black plastic splash shield underneath the car. Remove the shield. Open the lid for the coolant tank. Drain coolant from the block into a container by removing the drain bolt under the exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold is located on the passenger side, behind the oil filter.
3. Grab a 32-mm side open-end wrench. Use this to remove the cooling fan from the water pump by turning the nut clockwise to remove it. Once removed, keep it stored in an upright position and remove the fan shroud by unclipping the two clips that hold it on. Remove the coolant hoses from the radiator and water pump. Remember which hose goes where for when you put them back on.
4. Remove the two mounting bolts that are holding the radiator in place. Remove the radiator. Remove the three bolts that are holding the distributor cap in place and then remove the cap. Loosen the three screws that are holding the rotos in place and remove the rotor. There will also be a dust shield underneath the rotor that you need to remove as well.
5. Find the four 10mm bolts that are holding the water pump in place and loosen them. Find the six 13mm bolts holding the crank pulley in place and loosen those as well. Loosen and remove the belts for power steering, air conditioner and alternator and water pump.
6. Remove the water pump bolts and the pump itself. Finish removing the crank pulley bolts and the crank pulley itself. There is something called a harmonic damper located behind the pulley that you need to leave in place.
7. Remove the three bolts holding the upper camshaft cover in place. Use a 22mm socket and ratchet on the crankshaft nut and turn clockwise until the mark on the sprocket lines up with the notch on the head. The mark sometimes looks like an arrow or an indent. Also, make sure that the 'O/T' mark on the harmonic damper lines up with the notch on the lower timing belt cover. If these timing marks are not aligned, the process will not work successfully.
8. Continue to remove the crankshaft damper. Remove the bolts holding the lower camshaft cover into place and loosen the top bolt for the timing belt tensioner pulley. Loosen the lower bolt as well and rotate the tensioner towards passenger side of the car. Then, tighten the upper bolt back.
9. Slide the timing belt off of its pulleys and turn the sprockets clockwise, starting at the camshaft sprocket. Remove the top tensioner bolt, guide pin and spring. Remove the lower bolt as well and the tensioner. Install the new timing belt tensioner pulley. Hand tighten the lower bolt and install the guide pin and spring. Rotate the pulley towards the passenger side and loosely put in the bolt. Push the pulley all the way towards the passenger side and tighten the bolt.
10. Adjust the timing marks if you need to to make them line up. Install the new timing belt. Work in a clockwise direction and make sure to keep it tight between each sprocket. Loosen the upper tensioner bolt until the tensioner rotates to the driver's side. This will engage the timing belt.
11. Install the lower timing cover and harmonic damper. Make sure that the timing belt marks line up by rotating the crankshaft with the socket two full turns. If they do not align, you need to remove the belt and install it again until the lines match up.
12. Tighten the upper and lower tensioner pulleys and bolts. Reinstall camshaft cover, water pump, belts, radiator and fan belt. Reinstall the distributor cap and rotor and radiator hoses. Plug the drain in the block and top engine off with coolant. Reinstall splash shield.

How to Remove a Mercedes Cylinder Head

1. Lift the hood and study the layout of the cylinder head which needs to be removed. The fuel sending unit will need to be removed or disabled before you attempt to remove the cylinder head, as well as the cylinder head cover and valve covers. Refer to the specific engine layout in your Mercedes Benz repair guide to determine what must be removed prior to removing the cylinder head.
2. Unbolt the cylinder head by loosening the retaining bolts one at a time starting with the bottom bolt in the center. The next bolt will be the top center. Remove the next bolt in a clockwise fashion from the bottom, then remove the bolt to the right of the one at the top. Continue in this fashion until all the head bolts are removed completely. Do not attempt to pry or pull on the cylinder head until the bolts are removed.
3. Pull the cylinder head away from the engine block, being careful to avoid bending the valves or allowing waste gasket material or other debris to enter the cylinders. If replacing the head gasket, scrape the old gasket material away with a plastic scraper if necessary, and ensure that the mounting surface of the cylinder head is completely clean before reinstalling the head.

How to Install the Front Brake Rotors on a 96 BMW 740IL

1. Loosen the BMW’s front wheel bolts with a ratchet and socket. Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and place jack stands under its frame rails. Lower the 740iL onto the jack stands. Remove the wheel bolts and remove the front wheels.
2. Trace the brake pad level sensor wire -- on the driver’s side only -- until you find where it connects to the BMW’s wiring harness. Press and hold the unlocking button on the wiring harness, then unplug it from the vehicle’s harness. Unfasten the retaining bolt that secures the pad level sensor bracket to the caliper, using a ratchet and socket, and pull the level sensor wire from its routing clip.
3. Instruct an assistant to press and hold the brake pedal. Remove the rotor-retaining screw in the center of the rotor with a ratchet and a hex-bit socket.
4. Find the out caliper-retaining clip -- the metal clip on the outer part of the caliper. Remove this clip by prying it out with a flat-head screwdriver.
5. Pull the plastic caps covering the caliper bolts from the caliper. Remove the two caliper pins with a ratchet and hex-bit socket, then pull the caliper up and out of the caliper bracket. Hang the caliper from a nearby suspension component with a bungee cord. If the outer brake pad did not fall out when you removed the caliper, pull the pad from the caliper.
6. Remove the two caliper bracket bolts with a ratchet and socket. Pull the caliper bracket off the steering knuckle.
7. Pull the rotor of the 740iL’s hub. If the rotor does not pull off easily, lightly tap it with a rubber mallet to free it. Set a new rotor on the front hub, lining up its screw hole with that in the hub. Hand-tighten the rotor-retaining screw. Hold the rotor firmly to prevent it from turning, then tighten the rotor-retaining screw to 12 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.
8. Set the caliper bracket back on the front steering knuckle and hand-thread its retaining bolts. Torque the caliper bracket bolts to 81 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.
9. Position a drain pan under the caliper. Place an 8-inch C-clamp over the caliper so that its fixed part touches the rear of the caliper body and its screw part contacts the inner brake pad. Tighten the C-clamp until it touches the inner brake pad, then set a combination wrench on the bleeder valve -- the ¼-inch metal valve -- on top of the caliper.
10. Turn the bleeder valve a half-turn counterclockwise to open it, then immediately start tightening the C-clamp to press the caliper piston into the caliper. Continue tightening the C-clamp until the piston stops moving, then immediately close the bleeder valve.
11. Pull the old inner brake pad from the caliper; notice that small metal clips hold it inside the cavity in the piston. The brake pad level sensor comes off with the inner brake pad. Line up the clips on the rear of the new inner brake pad with the cavity in the piston, then press the brake pad toward the piston until the pad is flat against the end of the piston. On the driver’s side only, press a new pad level sensor into the groove on the top of the brake pad, nearest to the hole in the top of the caliper.
12. Set the outer brake pad in the caliper and immediately set the caliper on its bracket. Wipe all of the old grease off the caliper pins and apply a thin coat of new disc brake grease onto the smooth part of each pin. Hand-thread the caliper pins into the caliper, then torque them to 22 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and hex-bit socket.
13. Set the outer caliper-retaining clip so that the ends of its longest side are between the caliper bracket and the center hub of the rotor. Press the clip upward to insert its two tabs into the two holes in the outer part of the caliper.
14. Route the pad level sensor wiring in the same manner the old one was positioned. Hand-tighten the pad level sensor bracket bolt, then tighten it with a ratchet and socket. Press the pad level sensor wiring into the routing clip, then plug it into the BMW’s wiring harness.
15. Press the plastic caps back in place over the caliper guide pins.
16. Repeat Steps 2 through 15 to replace the rotor on the other side of the 740iL.
17. Reinstall the front wheels on the 740iL’s front hubs, then hand-tighten the wheel bolts. Raise the BMW off the jack stands with a floor jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the wheel bolts, in a crisscross pattern, to between 95 and 111 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.
18. Press and release the brake pedal until it feels firm. Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir. Add DOT 4 brake fluid, as needed, to bring the level up to the “Max" line on the reservoir.
19. Turn the ignition to the “1” position and leave it in that position for at least 30 seconds to reset the brake pad level light. Turn the ignition off.

How to Customize a Mercedes

1. Install a set of aftermarket wheels. A Mercedes looks great with a larger set of wheels and tires, so start the modifying process by swapping out the stock wheels for lighter, more aggressive alloys. Many companies make wheels for Mercedes, but it's best to stick with established brands like BBS, AMG and AC Schnitzer. Try to steer clear of 20-inch chrome rims if possible.
2. Install a lower, stiffer suspension for a better appearance and additional performance. Pair a set of high-quality lowering springs from a company like Brabus or Carlsson with some stiffer shocks from Bilstein or Koni. If you really want to increase the car's handling, bolt on a set of larger sway bars, which will really reduce body roll during fast cornering. Your car will look better and perform better, with more nimble, sure-footed cornering.
3. Increase the engine's horsepower. Replace the stock and restrictive exhaust for a larger-diameter setup and feel the benefit of more power and a more tuned exhaust note. You can go a step further by reprogramming the ECU (electronic control unit) and installing a better air intake. Beyond that, the sky is the limit with supercharger and turbocharger kits that will add a tremendous amount of power to your car.
4. Upgrade your car's stopping power. Better brakes make sure the performance of your Mercedes remains balanced, particularly if you are planning on upgrading the horsepower. Brembo offers big brake kit upgrades for a dramatic improvement in stopping power. If you want to keep it basic, then performance-oriented pads and cross-drilled rotors from a company like Zimmerman is a good bet.
5. Modify the interior. In stock form, a Mercedes interior is a pretty great place to spend time, but there are several options for upgrading this aspect of the car. Start with an aluminum shift knob and go from there. There are aluminum and carbon fiber trim kits available for most cars. You can even install a rich Alcantara (faux suede) headliner for a very upscale look and feel.
6. Unless your Mercedes is one of the high-performance AMG variants, which come standard with an array of performance and aesthetic enhancements, the exterior is probably on the subtle side. Several companies offer aesthetic enhancements, with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) AMG parts and products from companies like Brabus and MKB being some of the very best in quality and fitment. How to Discolor Used Engine Oil

1. Drain old, used oil from the car and contain it in a sealed bucket or jug. Used motor oil is a pollutant that can harm the environment, so it needs to be stored in a container it will not leak from.
2. Pour a gallon of your fluid into the old oil, using a funnel to avoid spilling it. Water, antifreeze and similar water-based fluids will all change the color of the oil. Water is the best choice because it is not a pollutant or toxic to the environment and engine oil will mix with water, though it may separate if left to sit for long periods.
3. Stir or shake the oil and water mixture. The oil should take on a lighter, milky color and may bear a resemblance to a chocolate milkshake in terms of color and consistency. If the oil is still too dark, continue adding water.

How to Manuel Shift for the Best Gas Mileage

1. Listen to your car as you drive. You can hear the engine revving louder as the RPM increase. Your goal is to keep the RPM low without stalling the car. This will decrease the amount of power you have and slow down your acceleration time, because the engine will not be working as hard. It will take some practice to listen to your car and monitor the RPM gauge before you can shift to optimize your gas mileage. You do not need to have a manual transmission to do this. If your automatic transmission has the option to switch into a tiptronic mode where you can control the gears, you can shift gears in your automatic vehicle to get better gas mileage.
2. Shift up to a higher gear between 2 and 3 RPM until you get to your optimal gear for the speed you want to reach. If you quickly need power, for example when climbing a hill, you can downshift to a lower gear to increase your RPM and gain enough power to drive up the hill.
3. Shift down to a lower gear later than normally. As you decelerate, wait until the RPM get low before downshifting. This will prevent the engine from revving high when you shift to a lower gear. If you need to slow down to stop, you can take the car out of gear to glide to a stop.

How to Tell If the Idle Control Valve Is Bad?

1. Start your car, and listen to the idle. Does it sound faster or slower than usual? Does it 'stumble?' All of these things are symptoms of a failing control valve.
2. Locate the idle control valve on the intake. In every car they look different so refer to the repair manual of your specific car to know what it looks like.
3. Remove valve from the intake and clean with carburator cleaner. It will probably be covered with black varnish so some amount of cleaning will be necessary. Once clean, reinstall.
4. Start the car and determine if the engine's idling has improved. If the idling has not improved, you may need to replace the ICV.

How to Change the Rear Brake Pads on a 1989 Audi 200

1. Loosen the rear lug nuts with a ratchet and socket and raise the rear of the vehicle with a floor jack. Slide jack stands under the Audi’s rear cross member and lower the vehicle onto the jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and pull the wheels from the rear hubs.
2. Remove each of the two caliper bolts with a ratchet and socket while holding each bolt’s respective guide pin steady with a combination wrench. Pull the caliper from its bracket and hang it from a nearby suspension component using a bungee strap.
3. Slide the brake pads from the caliper bracket. Remove the two caliper bracket bolts, then pull the caliper bracket from the rear hub.
4. Pull the rotor from the rear hub. If the rotor will not pull off easily, lightly tap the rear of it with a rubber mallet to free it.
5. Inspect the rotor for any defects, including deep grooves, uneven wear, mirrorlike shine or evidence of grinding. If any defects exist, replace the rotor with a new one. Alternatively, if you have access to a micrometer, measure the thickness of the rotor and compare it to its minimum refinishing thickness of 0.335 inches. If it is at least that thick, have a machine shop or auto repair shop resurface the rotor.
6. Slide the original or new rotor onto the rear hub and position the caliper bracket back on the rear hub. Hand-thread the caliper bracket bolts, then tighten them to 48 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.
7. Insert new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
8. Remove the caliper from the bungee strap and find the Allen key-shaped hole in the center of the caliper piston. Using a ratchet, a 6-inch socket extension and an Allen-bit socket, turn the caliper piston clockwise while pushing the piston toward the caliper body until the piston inserts completely into the caliper’s bore.
9. Set the caliper on the bracket and hand-thread new caliper bolts into the caliper. Tighten the caliper bolts to 26 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket, as you use a combination wrench to keep each bolt’s respective guide pin from turning.
10. Repeat steps 2 through 9 to replace the brake pads on the other side of the Audi.
11. Install the wheels back onto the rear hubs and hand-tighten the lug nuts. Raise the 200 off the jack stands, using a floor jack, then remove the jack stands. Lower the Audi to the ground and tighten the lug nuts to 90 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.
12. Press and release the brake pedal until it feels firm, then check the fluid level in the 200’s master cylinder reservoir. If the fluid level is not at the “Max” line, unscrew the cap from the master cylinder reservoir and add DOT 4 brake fluid until it reaches the “Max” level, then tighten the cap.

How to Install a Dual Exhaust on an Audi TT

1. Spray the bolts that hold the clamps together on the exhaust with WD-40 to loosen them so they are easily removed later.
2. Park your car on rear stands and put it in 'Park.' Let your engine and exhaust cool completely. This might take as long as 20 minutes. Pop the hood and disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal.
3. Loosen the two bolts on the clamp that holds the exhaust system, using a socket wrench with a 17 millimeter socket attachment. Open the clamps so they are loosened.
4. Use a big flat-head screwdriver to pry the grommet off of the center hanger of the exhaust. Afterwards, attach a 13 millimeter socket to the socket wrench and unbolt the two brackets that hold the muffler in place. When the brackets have been unbolted, the weight of the exhaust system will be connected to one hanger still.
5. Rotate the muffler slightly back and forth to verify that the compression coupler is loose. You might need to loosen the clamps more if the pipe is not moving. If the pipe is still stuck, you can tap it with a hammer on the clamp area to move it loose.
6. Use a big flat-head screwdriver to remove the last hangar that is holding the exhaust system. Prepare to hold the exhaust as you guide it down out of the car. Make sure the exhaust system does not rest on the catalytic converter, or it can become damaged.
7. Bend the brackets of the exhaust system if needed to help support the exhaust in the cutouts of the bumper.
8. Take the stock brackets off the stock exhaust. Put the dual exhaust system into place where the old exhaust was, then re-attach the compression coupler. Re-attach the rear hanger to hold the muffler into place.
9. Re-attach the brackets, then tighten the bolts to secure the dual exhaust into place.

How to Diagnose a Car That#039;s Running Hot

1. Check the antifreeze/coolant level in your radiator. Wait until the car has cooled down and the engine is cold, and then remove the radiator cap. If the fluid level is sufficient, you should be able to visually see the liquid inside. If it is low, add more according to your car's specifications. If you have to add more than a pint of fluid, it is possible that you have a leak.
2. Check your oil level. Remove the dipstick from under your hood and wipe it clean with a rag. Reinsert the stick, pull it out and then read the level based on the markings on the stick. Oil serves as a lubricant and if there is not an adequate amount, then your car will be working harder to perform and this can cause overheating.
3. Investigate the thermostat. This should be done with the car powered off, and while the engine is slightly warm. This problem is one that will most often need to handled by a mechanic. For a do-it-yourself check, however, hold your hand to both the lower and upper radiator hoses; both should feel warm to the touch. If you have just one that is warm while the other is cold, the thermostat could be the culprit causing the overheating.
4. Visit your mechanic. Unless you are trained to handle these problems, it is best to leave them to a professional. A mechanic can hook your car up to a diagnostic computer that will give a reading and a specific report on the problem(s) with your vehicle.

How to Clean an Audi Engine Compartment

1. Allow the vehicle to cool completely before you start to wash the engine bay. If the engine is up to temperature and cold water is sprayed on it, the rapid cooling of the metal block may cause it to crack.
2. Cover all of the electrical components in the engine bay with the plastic wrap and tape them off using the masking tape. You want to try to cover these items so they don't get water in them and potentially short out when the vehicle is started. It's not critical that each piece is sealed completely from the water, but this will definitely help in the process.
3. Spray the degreaser liberally all over the engine, making sure to really soak the engine with the cleaner as this will loosen up the dirt and grime on the engine.
4. Scrub the engine using the scrubbing brush, breaking up any dirt or grime that you find along the way. This is the longest step in the process and can take some time depending on the level of filth under the hood.
5. Adjust the pressure washer so that it puts out a 3-inch wide spray. Pull the trigger and hose down the engine compartment, keeping the nozzle about 3 feet away from the engine at first then moving closer as you work.
6. Remove all of the plastic and masking tape from the engine bay manually.
7. Allow the engine to air-dry for at least an hour before you drive the vehicle, or you can use a microfiber towel to dry it if need be.

4. Obtain your retail clearance documentation and submit it to the RIV (by e-mail, fax or mail) as soon as you buy your vehicle. This documentation (usually a letter) will verify that the manufacturer has no outstanding recalls associated with the car. Contact Audi of America at 1-800-822-2834 to obtain this documentation.
5. Notify the U.S. Customs and Border Protection of your intended export of the vehicle at least 72 hours prior to export. Contact your intended port of crossing directly in order to find out exactly what you need to submit and how to do so. Usually this involves faxing the certificate of title to the border agency at your point of crossing, and you will need to get the physical title stamped at the border upon crossing.
6. Arrange all of your documentation for inspection prior to arriving at your Canadian port of entry. The Canadian Border Services Agency will check your documents (including bill of sale and U.S. Customs-stamped certificate of title), verify vehicle admissibility and process your Vehicle Import Form as well as payment (unless your vehicle is exempt).
7. Bring an official vehicle inspection form, and your vehicle, to an authorized RIV inspection center for completion. After you have paid your registration fee, submitted your Vehicle Import Form and confirmed your recall clearance, you will receive this vehicle inspection form.
8. Contact your Canadian licensing authority upon completion of the RIV inspection to determine how to properly license your vehicle.

2. Turn the ignition to the “Off” position.
3. Disconnect the negative (black) battery cable using a wrench.
4. Remove the air cleaner assembly using a ratchet, ratchet extension, socket and a Phillips head screwdriver if necessary. The air cleaner assembly sits on top of the engine and is connected to the throttle body on the intake manifold.
5. Unplug the wiring harness from the back of the alternator. The alternator is in the upper area of the engine compartment, next to the engine and is driven by a belt connected to the crankshaft pulley.
6. Remove the battery wire retaining nut from the back of the alternator using a wrench. If your alternator has a ground wire connected to it, detach the retaining nut as well to disconnect the wire using a wrench.
7. Loosen the hose clamp from the cooling duct connected to the alternator using a Phillips head screwdriver and detach the hose from the alternator.
8. Hold the adjusting nut of the lock bolt onto the rear of the alternator with a wrench and loosen the lock bolt with a ratchet and socket.
9. Loosen the alternator belt tensioning bolt in front of the alternator using a ratchet and socket, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
10. Unfasten the alternator mounting bolts using the ratchet and socket and remove the alternator from the vehicle.
Installing the New Alternator
11. Position the new alternator into place in the engine compartment and start the mounting bolts by hand. Then tighten the mounting bolts using the ratchet and socket.
12. Slip the alternator belt over the alternator pulley and torque the tensioning bolt to 60 inch-pounds using a torque wrench.
13. Hold the lock bolt adjusting nut with a wrench and tighten the lock bolt using the ratchet and socket.
14. Reinstall the cooling duct hose onto the alternator and tighten the hose clamp using the Phillips head screwdriver.
15. Reattach the battery wire and ground wire, if equipped, to the rear of the alternator using the wrench.
16. Reconnect the wiring harness to the rear of the alternator.
17. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket and the Phillips head screwdriver, if necessary.
18. Reconnect the negative (black) battery cable.
19. Reenter the radio code using the radio control buttons.
