How to Remove the Cooling Fan Assembly on a 2002 Audi A4
1. Slide the drain pan under the radiator petcock. Loosen the petcock and allow the coolant to drain into the drain pan. If the coolant is less than five years old, and the drain pan is clean, you can reuse the coolant.
2. Jack up the front of the vehicle with the floor jack and support it with jack stands. Remove the lower engine shield. Unplug the cooling fan thermal switch. Unplug the fan's wiring harness connector.
3. Remove the thermal switch retaining clip. Then pull the switch out of its housing. If you have the type of thermal switch -- depending on your engine it could be either one -- unscrew the switch from the housing with the appropriate crowfoot wrench. If a crowfoot wrench is not available, you can use a thin-walled, 3/8-inch drive, 12-point, deep-well socket and breaker bar.
4. Unbolt and remove the front bumper assembly with the appropriate socket. Remove the upper and lower hoses from the radiator with a screwdriver to loosen the clamps. Slide a drain pan under the transmission cooler line. Remove the lines from the radiator with the appropriate line wrench. Block the ends of the lines and prop them up so that fluid doesn't continue to leak.
5. Unbolt the radiator with the appropriate socket. Lift the radiator and fan assembly out of the engine compartment. Unbolt the fan shroud and fan from the radiator.
