How to Replace the Tie Rod on a 2000 Audi A4


1. Loosen, but do not remove the lugs of the wheel on the side with the worn tie rod end. Raise the vehicle with a floor jack and support it with jack stands under the frame. Remove the lugs and tire.
2. Mark the position of the lock nut on the steering rod. Hold the steering rod with one wrench and loosen the lock nut with another.
3. Remove the cap nut. Remove the pinch bolt. Separate the tie rod end from the spindle using a tie rod removal tool. Hold the steering rod with a wrench and remove the tie rod end from the steering rod. Count and record the number of turns it takes to remove.
4. Install the replacement tie rod end threading it on the same number of turns as the one you removed. Push the tie rod stud through the spindle arm. Install the pinch bolt. (Torque to 33 foot-pounds.) Install the cap nut. (Torque to 62 inch-pounds.) Hold against the tie rod end with a wrench and tighten the lock nut with another wrench.
5. Replace the wheel and lugs. Tighten the lugs. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground. Torque the lugs to 89 foot\-pounds.
