How to Import an Audi A3 to Canada From the United States

1. Verify that your Audi A3 remains admissible into Canada by contacting the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) at 1-888-848-8240. Only some models of S6 and A6 wagons are inadmissible, but this could change at any time, so verify your specific make, model and year.
2. Use your potential car's VIN to discover its branding history. If there has previously been an accident serious enough to result in an insurance write-off or nonrepairable status, you may not be able to license the car in Canada.
3. Research the Transport Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to determine if your vehicle requires any modifications to comply. Also see if any exemptions apply to your vehicle.
4. Obtain your retail clearance documentation and submit it to the RIV (by e-mail, fax or mail) as soon as you buy your vehicle. This documentation (usually a letter) will verify that the manufacturer has no outstanding recalls associated with the car. Contact Audi of America at 1-800-822-2834 to obtain this documentation.
5. Notify the U.S. Customs and Border Protection of your intended export of the vehicle at least 72 hours prior to export. Contact your intended port of crossing directly in order to find out exactly what you need to submit and how to do so. Usually this involves faxing the certificate of title to the border agency at your point of crossing, and you will need to get the physical title stamped at the border upon crossing.
6. Arrange all of your documentation for inspection prior to arriving at your Canadian port of entry. The Canadian Border Services Agency will check your documents (including bill of sale and U.S. Customs-stamped certificate of title), verify vehicle admissibility and process your Vehicle Import Form as well as payment (unless your vehicle is exempt).
7. Bring an official vehicle inspection form, and your vehicle, to an authorized RIV inspection center for completion. After you have paid your registration fee, submitted your Vehicle Import Form and confirmed your recall clearance, you will receive this vehicle inspection form.
8. Contact your Canadian licensing authority upon completion of the RIV inspection to determine how to properly license your vehicle.
