How to Lower the Convertible Top of a 500SL

1. Open your trunk and pull out the luggage cover over the bottom of the trunk. There are two small bars on either side of the cover and fit into two small groves on the side of the trunk to hold the cover into place. The luggage cover must be extended for the convertible top to be lowered. Close the trunk.
2. Slide your key into the ignition and start your car. Keep your car in 'park'. The convertible will not lower if the car is in neutral, drive or reverse. Engage your parking brake.
3. Pull the 'Convertible' switch forward. This switch is located on the middle console of the car between the driver and passenger seats. The switch must be held down throughout the entire process that convertible is lowered. 'Hardtop Open' will be shown on your display, letting you know the convertible top is open and locked in to place.
4. Release your finger from the switch when the convertible top is lowered and has locked into place.
