How to Change the Oil in a 5

1. Jack up the car on the driver's side or use ramps to raise the car. Locate a black rectangular plate under the side skirt.
2. Remove the cover plate with the Phillips screwdriver and locate the oil pan drain plug.
3. Place the oil collector pan underneath the drain plug. Use the 17mm socket to slowly remove the drain plug. Allow the oil about 20 minutes to drain completely.
4. Pop the hood and locate the oil filter. Remove the oil filter (be careful because there is a decent amount of oil in the filter). Place the old filter in a plastic bag.
5. Use a Flat Head Screw Driver and remove the old rubber O-Ring from the Canister top. Separate the Canister top from the old oil filter by simply pulling the two apart.
6. Take the New Rubber O-Ring and coat it with a little fresh oil. This makes it easier to remove next time. Slip the New Rubber O-Ring onto the Canister Top. Take the New Oil Filter and snap it into to the Canister Top.
7. Place the connected Canister Top and New Oil Filter into the Oil Filter Canister. Screw down the Canister Top to hand tightness. Be sure that the New Rubber O-Ring seal is no longer exposed.
8. Take the Oil Pan Screw and remove the Old Metal Ring. Take the new metal ring from the new filter's bag and place it onto the oil pan screw. Once the oil has had sufficient drainage, screw the Oil Pan Screw back into its receiving end. Tighten the screw enough to ensure no leakage. Hand tightness should be sufficient with the Socket Wrench. Replace the Cover Plate back and screw close.
9. Now in the engine compartment, unscrew the square Oil Cap. Be sure to check exactly how much oil your BMW requires. Use the funnel to begin pouring in the oil. Close the cap and close the hood. **Dispose of the used oil appropriately**
