How to Change Front Wheel Bearings on a BMW


Removing Brakes to Access Front Wheel Bearings
1. Jack up the car, using your jack.
2. Remove the front tires, using a lug wrench.
3. Unclip the brake pad wear sensor, located on the brake caliper.
4. Remove the guide pin bolts located on the back of the caliper, using an Allen wrench.
5. Slide the caliper off the caliper bracket. Be sure to hang the caliper from a suitable piece of wire so that it does not put undue tension on the rubber brake hose.
6. Pull off the inner brake pad from the caliper piston.
7. Slide the outer brake pad off of the caliper bracket.
8. Unscrew the two bolts that hold the brake caliper bracket to the steering knuckle, using a socket and ratchet.
9. Unscrew the rotor retaining screw, which is located on the rotor, using an Allen wrench.
10. Slide the rotor off of the hub.
Changing Front Wheel Bearings
11. Remove the front grease cap from the center of the hub, using a hammer and chisel.
12. Remove the hub retaining nut, using a large socket and ratchet.
13. Attach the puller to the hub assembly and remove the assembly from the steering knuckle.
14. Grease the new hub and bearings, using high temperature wheel bearing grease.
15. Hammer the hub back on the steering knuckle, using a rubber mallet.
16. Replace the hub retaining nut, using a large socket and ratchet.
17. Reattach the grease cap.
18. Slide the rotor back on the hub and screw the rotor retaining screw back on the rotor, using an Allen wrench.
19. Replace the two bolts that hold the brake caliper bracket to the steering knuckle, using a socket and ratchet.
20. Slide the outer brake pad back on the caliper brackets.
21. Slider the inner brake pad back onto the caliper piston.
22. Place the caliper back on the caliper bracket and reattach the guide pin bolts.
23. Clip the brake pad wear sensor back on the brake caliper.
24. Remount the front tires, using a lug wrench.
