How to Replace the Battery in a 1996 Audi Sedan

1. Open the hood and locate the rubber hood seal connected to the plastic engine bolted just below the windshield cowl on the passenger side of the firewall. Pry the seal off the plastic cowl. Use a screwdriver to help you, if needed.
2. Pull the plastic cover off the plastic cowl by pulling it up and out of the Audi's engine bay.
3. Remove the bolt that secures the passenger side plastic cowl to the firewall with a socket and ratchet and remove the three screws that hold the cowl in place using a screwdriver. This exposes the battery.
4. Remove the two bolts that secure the battery clamps in place with a socket and ratchet. The battery clamps are on the left and right of the battery.
5. Remove the negative and positive battery terminal cables with a socket and ratchet and then pull the battery out of the engine compartment.
6. Place the new battery into the compartment and secure the negative and positive battery cables to the battery with your socket and ratchet.
7. Secure the battery to the battery tray with the battery clamps, socket and ratchet.
8. Place the plastic cowl back onto the firewall and secure it using the bolt, screws, screwdriver and socket.
9. Snap the engine cover onto the plastic cover and press the rubber seal onto the cover's edge.
