Manual Removal of a 1990 Mercedes Benz Sl Soft Top

1. Locate the Allen wrench in the Mercedes-Benz tool kit. You will need to use this tool several times. Ensure you have a helper nearby, as manual removal of the soft top is best done by two people.
2. Lower the side windows on your Mercedes-Benz SL. Use your hands to swivel the left and right sun visors attached to the top of the windshield 90 degrees, so they are parallel to the side windows.
3. Locate the two plastic caps on each side at the top of the windshield. Pry off the caps using your fingers or a screwdriver. Insert the Allen wrench into the socket on the right side. Move the wrench counterclockwise until you feel it click two notches. This releases the front of the soft top. Repeat the procedure on the left to release the other side of the soft top.
4. Unlock the left and right side of the rear compartment cover where the soft top folds into the vehicle. Use the wrench to turn the bolts toward the front of the Mercedes-Benz. Use your hands to lift the storage lid to an upright position.
5. Place your hands on one side of soft top's front. Instruct your helper to take the other side in the same fashion. Slide the soft top toward the rear of the car. Both sides need to slide back simultaneously. Carefully fold the material into the rear compartment, making sure it doesn’t get caught in the metal framework.
6. Close the compartment cover so it locks into place. Open the trunk. Locate the two access panels, one on each side of the back truck panel. Open the access panels using your fingers or a screwdriver.
7. Put the open end of the Allen wrench into the bolt located inside the trunk access panel. Turn the wrench clockwise until you hear it click. Repeat on the other side. Close both of the panels and the trunk.
