How to Replace the Rear Sway Bar on a Mercedes

1. Lift the rear of the car up using a car jack, which should be located in the trunk of your CLK by the spare tire Follow the instructions in your CLK manual as if you are about to change your tire. Use two jack stands to keep the car elevated. The tires should be slightly off the ground. The CLK model has an increased challenge in removing the sway bar, so remove both rear tires for easier removal.
2. Locate the sway bar bolt. The sway bar may have a green color-coded bolt or the bar itself may be coded with a green streak on the end. It's located in front of a large metal spring behind the wheel. Unscrew the bolt and nut of the sway bar using a 16 mm socket and ratchet. Use lubricating spray like WD-40 if you have issues loosening the screw.
3. Remove the under-body plastic shield. The plastic shield is there to add an extra level of protection for the bar and other components. The plastic shield is mounted with two plastic clips on each side and two 10 mm screws. Remove the screws using a 10 mm socket and use a flat head screwdriver to pop out the plastic cover. Remove the 13 mm bolts connecting the sway bar.
4. Release the sway bar by pulling it up. If you remove both rear tires, you should not have any difficulty pulling the sway bar out. Install the new sway bar in the same position as the old one. Use two new 13 mm bolts to reconnect the sway bar. Use the 16 mm bolts that came with your new sway bar and attach them to each end of the sway bar. Replace the plastic shield and the rear tires.
