How to Know If a Mercedes Has High

1. Look at the front of the headlight assembly. On the lens, there will be one of three markings etched into the lens. Depending on your Mercedes, you will see the designation of D1R, D1S, D2R or D2S. These are the standard housings used for HID, or high intensity discharge, headlights on your Mercedes.
2. Check for narrow bulbs. Xenon headlights, which are the high-intensity headlights used on Mercedes vehicles, are much slimmer than halogen headlight bulbs.
3. Turn the headlights on. If steps 1 and 2 suggest that the headlights might be high-intensity headlights, turn the headlights on. Xenon headlights are roughly 300% brighter than halogen headlights and have a bright bluish tint. They also have an average service life of about 4,000 hours, which is eight times that of most halogen headlights.
