How to Install a Fuel Pump on a BMW 735IL
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the 735I/L7's battery with a crescent wrench. Pull out the fuel pump fuse in the fuse box.
2. Locate the banjo bolt on the frame rail before the fuel injectors in the engine bay of your 735I/L7. Set some rags around the bolt. Release the bolt with your wrench. Wait until the bubbling gas stops bubbling. Clean up whatever gas leaks out. This action depressurizes the fuel system.
3. Open the trunk. Remove the trunk carpeting. Remove the five bolts securing the black access panel to the trunk compartment. Pull off the access panel.
4. Depress the tabs of the wiring harness to pull off the fuse wiring harness. Slip the hose quick disconnect tool into the fitting on the fuel sender line. Press inward. Pull out the hose from the fuel pump stem. Repeat this process for the EVAP hose.
5. Wipe the gas tank surface near the fuel pump with rags to clean off any debris that could get into the gas tank when you pull out the fuel pump.
6. Remove the bolts securing the locking ring that holds in the fuel pump with your socket wrench set. Pull off the ring. Pull out the fuel pump and the fuel pump gasket.
7. Grease the new gasket from the fuel pump installation kit with motor oil. Lay it on the opening of the gas tank. Slide the new fuel pump, part number W0133-1604347, through the opening. Orient the stems of the pump so that they face between the two tic marks on the gas tank. Seal the fuel pump into the gas tank with the locking ring. Reattach the fuel line, EVAP hose and electrical connector.
8. Reinsert the fuel pump fuse. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn on the ignition of the BMW 735I/L7. Wait a few seconds. Turn the ignition off. Repeat this process until the engine turns on. Check the trunk for any leaks. Re-tighten any fittings if you notice a leak. Close the access panel.
