How to Install a 325 BMW Belt Tensioner

1. Place a three-eighths-inch ratchet driver into the square hole on the tensioner arm. Pull up on the ratchet handle, and remove the serpentine belt from the tensioner pulley. Do not remove the belt from any other pulleys.
2. Remove the spring from the bottom of the tensioner arm using a pair of pliers.
3. Remove the two bolts that secure the tensioner arm to the engine block using a socket and ratchet. Discard the old tensioner.
4. Place the new tensioner against the engine block, and secure it using the bolts, socket and ratchet.
5. Attach the spring to the bottom of the tensioner arm using the pliers.
6. Place the ratchet driver into the square hole on the new tensioner arm, pull up on the ratchet handle, and place the belt over the pulley.
7. Lower the ratchet handle, and remove the ratchet driver from the tensioner arm.
