How to Check Engine Light on 1995 C280 Mercedes

1. Park and turn off the vehicle's ignition. Open and secure the hood of the C280. Go to the passenger side of the engine bay, near the firewall, which is the wall between the engine and the driver's compartment. Locate the OBD port in the upper passenger corner of the firewall. Connect the OBD code scanner to the OBD port. Set the scanner on the upper strut mount, or a flat surface of the vehicle.
2. Sit in the driver's seat of the car and turn the ignition key to the 'ACC' position. The accessories position is the ignition position where all of the dashboard lights come on, but the vehicle does not start. Do not start the vehicle during this testing procedure.
3. Exit the vehicle and go back to the scanner. Power on the scanner with the power button. From the main menu on the scanner, choose 'Read Engine Codes' and press the 'READ' button. The scanner will prompt you to enter your vehicle year, make, model and sometimes the engine size. Enter all of the requested information, pressing the 'READ' button to accept each answer. If you make a mistake, press the 'ERASE' button to go back one step.
4. Allow the code scanner to read the vehicle during the scanning process. Write down the information produced by the scanner, using a pen and paper. Some scanners will give you the engine codes followed by a generic definition of the code. More expensive scanners offer complete code definitions, as well as information on the part of the vehicle that is the source of the code.
