How to Change an Audi TT Alternator

1. Lift the hood of the Audi TT and prop it open. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery post with an open-end wrench. Locate the alternator near the front of the engine compartment on the passenger side.
2. Loosen the bolts securing the alternator to the bracket and the engine a couple of turns with a socket wrench. Move the alternator forward on the bracket and take the alternator belt off the pulley by hand.
3. Remove the electrical wiring plug from the alternator socket, pulling it straight off by hand. Unfasten the ground wire and the electrical wiring connector from the alternator, removing the bolts with a socket wrench.
4. Unfasten the alternator bolts with a socket wrench until you can slide them out of the alternator by hand. Lift the alternator out of the bracket and remove it from the engine compartment.
5. Place the new alternator in the bracket, sliding the bolts into the alternator and tightening them until they are just loose enough for the alternator to slide onto the bracket. Attach the electrical wires to the alternator with the bolts. Insert the electrical wiring plug into the alternator socket by hand.
6. Position the alternator belt around the pulley and pull back on the alternator gently with a small pry bar to add tension to the belt. Tighten the alternator bolts with a socket wrench while you are applying tension.
7. Reattach the negative cable to the battery post with the open-end wrench. Close the hood.
