How Do I Replace the Fuel Pump on a 1993 BMW 318is?

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Open the gas cap to relieve pressure from the fuel tank.
2. Slide the front seats forward. Raise the back seat by pulling up on it from the front, lower edge. Lift up the right side of the sound deadening material under the seat. This should expose a circular metal cover with wires going to it.
3. Remove the four screws that hold the cover on with a Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the foam seal underneath it. You will see the top of the fuel pump once the cover is removed.
4. Disconnect the wire connectors that fasten to the top of the fuel pump. Loosen the hose clamps that hold the fuel lines to the fuel pump with a Phillips head screwdriver. Place a pair of vise grips on each hose so that the hose is squeezed together and fuel will not spill out. Slide the hoses off of the fuel pump.
5. Place the end of a flat head screwdriver against the notch in the large plastic ring that holds the fuel pump in place. Tap the screwdriver with a mallet to loosen the ring. Un-thread the ring and remove it.
6. Pull the fuel pump up and out of the fuel tank. The entire assembly will lift out of the tank. Make sure the large O-ring on the bottom of the fuel pump does not fall into the fuel tank to avoid having to fish it out.
7. Install a new O-ring onto the new pump in the same manner that the old O-ring was positioned on the fuel pump. Insert the new fuel pump into the tank in the reverse order of removal. Ensure that the O-ring seals around the opening of the tank once the fuel pump is installed.
8. Thread on the large plastic ring. Use the screwdriver and mallet to lightly tap it until it is tightened. Make sure you don't break the ring. Slide the fuel hose onto the new pump. Reinstall and tighten the hose clamps. Remove the vise grips from the fuel lines. Plug the wire connectors into the new fuel pump.
9. Reconnect the battery. Start the car to make sure that the new pump is functioning and that the car runs. Turn the car off. Reinstall the foam seal and then the fuel pump top cover. Push the back seat down.
