How to Change Oil on a BMW 530i

1. Place your car on a flat, hard surface. You may place the gear in the 'Park' position and then turn the engine off. These precautions are important to follow because you will be working underneath the car, and there is always a risk for injury. Keep the required materials nearby to ensure that the oil-changing process occurs smoothly.
2. Lie flat on the ground and crawl underneath the car. Look for the oil pan and place a bowl underneath it. This is will help to catch the residual oil as it is released from the pan. The oil pan will have a drain plug that is tightly fastened to prevent oil from falling out.
3. Loosen the drain plug with the wrench and remove it completely. This will cause the oil inside the pan to drain outside. Make sure the bowl is placed properly so that it catches all the oil. You may then re-screw the drain plug and close the pan.
4. Unlock the hood of your car. Locate the oil filter and remove it from the engine, using an oil filter wrench. You may also remove it with your hands, but this generally requires a lot more twisting force. Make sure the oil-filter gasket also comes off the engine when you remove the filter.
5. Place the new filter in the car and fasten it as tightly as possible. Make sure to place a few drops of the new oil on the oil gasket surface to create a better seal between the car and the gasket.
6. Remove the oil filter cap and place a funnel in the small opening. Pour the new oil inside the car until it is full. You may refer to the car owner's manual to find out the exact amount of oil to place inside the engine.
