How do I Remove the Steering Column From a Mercedes Benz 560 SEL?

1. Open up the hood of your Mercedes and find the battery. Use a wrench to loosen the clamp bolt which can be found around the negative battery terminal. Lift the negative cable off the terminal and away from the battery. This will make it safe to now begin removing the steering column.
2. Lower the steering wheel to its lowest possible position within the steering column. This will make it easier to remove. Locate the wheel cover connectors around the edge of the wheel. Use a flat head screwdriver to carefully remove them and pry the cover off the wheel.
3. Follow the electrical wiring for the horn and the air bag until you locate their connectors which connect them to the steering wheel. Unhook the connectors with your hands and carefully lift them from the steering wheel. Ensure you do not damage the air bag as you remove it as any damage to the bag will result in you needing to replace it.
4. Remove the retaining nut and washer which can be found in the center of the steering wheel. Keep the nut and washer in a safe area as you will need to reattach it to the wheel at a later date. Lift the steering wheel away from the steering column,
5. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws attached to the upper and lower steering column shrouds. Press in the connecting tabs on the upper shroud and pull it away from the column. Repeat the process on the lower shroud.
