How to Tune an Audi 80

Spark Plugs and Wiring
1. Remove the plastic, engine cover to access the spark plugs and ignition coil of the Audi 80. The spark plugs and wiring should ideally be changed once every three years to ensure a consistent engine ignition.
2. Tag the wires that connect the ignition coil of the Audi 80 to the individual spark plugs. It is important to know which wires hook up to each plug for proper connection. Unplug the wiring harness that connects to the spark plugs and coilpack to access these parts.
3. Lift each individual coilpack from its respective place to access the spark plugs. Use the gapping tool to measure the gap of each spark plug, which should be between .030 inches and .032 inches. Over time, these spark plugs can move from their intended gap, causing erratic wear on each unit.
4. Turn the spark plugs counterclockwise and remove them using a 5/8-inch socket wrench. Lower the replacement spark plug for this particular section and turn clockwise with 22 foot-pounds of pressure.
5. Push the coilpack back on top of the newly installed spark plug. Remove the old electrical wiring and replace with a new set. Attach the new wiring to the corresponding coilpack.
6. Replace the engine cover of the Audi 80 once all four spark plugs have been replaced. Start the engine and take note of the quickness in which the engine cranks.
Performance Air Filter
7. Open the hood and locate the air filter box of the Audi 80's engine. Differing from generation to generation, most air filter boxes are located on the driver's side of the vehicle. Upgrading to an aftermarket, wire-mesh air filter will improve engine performance. These filters are reusable, but annual cleaning is needed to ensure proper functioning.
8. Unsnap the brackets that hold the filter box together and open the lid to access the air filter.
9. Remove the factory air filter from its place slowly. Make sure any dirt and debris do not spill into the filter box.
10. Remove any leaves and trash lining the inside of the filter box. This area should be thoroughly cleaned so that air flow is properly maintained throughout the engine's intake system.
11. Lower the new air filter into place until it fits securely. Close the air filter box top and fasten the hardware to hold it in place.
