How to Install a Kenwood Into a BMW X5

1. Lift the BMW's hood and loosen the bolt holding the negative battery cable clamp to the negative battery terminal with an adjustable wrench. Lift the cable from the battery and set it aside. Move to the inside of the X5.
2. Pull the volume knob from the factory stereo's panel. Remove the screw bolt under the volume knob opening with a Torx T-10 socket and drive.
3. Slide the stereo assembly from the stereo mounting dock. Remove the two screw bolts on the side of the stereo bracket with the Torx driver and remove the stereo from the bracket.
4. Disconnect the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the outlets on the back of the stock stereo deck and set the unit aside. Replace the dash panel and stereo bracket back into the mounting dock and tighten the bolt on the panel with the Torx drive.
5. Pull the stereo wiring and antenna cables from the back of the dock to the front of the dashboard. Slide the Kenwood's installation sleeve into the dock while feeding the wiring through the back of the sleeve.
6. Fold the metal tabs inside the sleeve outward with a flat screwdriver to secure it within the dock. Plug the stereo wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter leads. The leads can only be connected one way.
7. Plug the wiring harness adapter lead connectors into the outlets on the right side of the Kenwood head unit's rear panel. Insert the antenna cable lead into the FM antenna input on the lower-left corner of the new stereo's back panel.
8. Slide the Kenwood stereo deck into the installation sleeve until it snaps into the stereo dock. Move back to the engine compartment.
9. Replace the negative battery cable clamp onto the negative battery terminal. Tighten the bolt on the negative battery cable's clamp with the wrench and close the hood.
