How to Install an Alternator on a 1994 Mercedes C280

1. Remove the negative terminal on the battery with a wrench. Loosen the top and bottom bolts in the alternator bracket with a socket to relieve tension on the belt. Tilt the bottom of the alternator in towards the engine to loosen the belt then lift it off the alternator. Do not remove the belt from any other pulley.
2. Pull the plastic field wire plug out of the rear of the alternator. Remove the large battery positive wire from the back of the alternator, unscrewing the large nut that secures the wire with a wrench. Remove the two bolts in the front of the alternator with a socket then lift the alternator out of the car.
3. Hold the new alternator in place while inserting the two bolts that secure it. Thread them in by hand as far as possible. Install the large battery primary wire on the rear of the alternator. Install the nut and tighten it with the wrench.
4. Push the plastic field wire plug into the rear opening on the alternator. Lift the belt and place it on the alternator pulley. Pull the bottom of the alternator to swing it out and away from the engine to apply tension to the belt. Tighten the two alternator bolts with the socket. Install the negative battery terminal and tighten it with the wrench.
