How Do I Replace a BMW E28 Alternator amp; Instructions?

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On the E28 series cars, the battery is located at the bottom of the engine compartment behind the headlight.
2. Remove, on 528e models, the bolts that hold the air filter and the air flow sensor to the engine. Loosen the hose clamp that holds the rubber air hose to the air sensor and slide the hose off the sensor. Remove the air filter box and air flow sensor from the engine bay.
3. Remove, on all models, the two nuts that fasten the wires to the back of the alternator with a socket and a ratchet, noting in which orientation they are installed.
4. Loosen the upper alternator mounting bolt and tensioning nut with two wrenches, one holding the bolt and the other loosening the nut. Turn the nut clockwise. Loosen the lower alternator mounting bolt with a socket. Loosen the nut that holds the alternator belt adjusting bracket to the engine.
5. Push the alternator as far as it will go towards the engine. It will pivot as you push it. Slide the alternator belt off the pulley on the front of the alternator. Remove the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator from the engine bay.
6. Install the alternator by sliding it into place and then installing the upper and then the lower alternator mounting bolts. Slide the alternator belt over the pulley on the alternator. Tighten the tensioning nut counterclockwise while holding the bolt with a wrench. Tighten the nut with a torque wrench to 62 foot-pounds.
7. Tighten the upper and lower mounting bolts. Reinstall the wires on the back of the alternator with the two nuts and tighten them. On the 528e, install the air filter box and the air flow sensor. Slide the air hose back onto the air flow sensor and tighten the hose clamp. Reconnect the battery.
