How do I Change the Fan Belt on a C220 Benz?

1. Park the vehicle and shut the engine off. Raise the hood and secure it in place.
2. Look on top of the plastic guard that covers the radiator for the belt routing diagram. This diagram is a picture of the belt being properly routed around each accessory. Use this diagram to install the new belt around the pulleys. Write the diagram down on a piece of paper, if needed.
3. Remove the plastic cover mounted over the fan by pulling out on the locking pins that are positioned on both sides of the cover. Pull the cover off and place it on the ground.
4. Locate the tensioner device for the belt. This device is a spring-loaded component that keeps the proper amount of tension on the belt at all times. The tensioner device on the Mercedes Benz is located on the front passenger side of the engine, between the crankshaft and the power steering pump. Use the bolt in the middle of the tensioner device pulley to pivot the tensioner.
5. Loosen the set screw located in the middle of the bolt head, in the center of the tensioner pulley, using a flat-head screwdriver. Only loosen the screw--do not remove it.
6. Pivot the tensioner from the bolt head located in the middle of the tensioner pulley, using the breaker bar and metric socket in a counterclockwise motion. Once the belt becomes loose, lift it out from under the tensioner pulley.
7. Slowly let the tensioner return to its original position, until it stops, then remove the breaker bar and socket from the tensioner pulley.
8. Remove the belt from all of the accessory pulleys, then pull the belt around each fan blade and out of the engine compartment.
9. Route the new belt around each fan blade and onto the crankshaft pulley. Use the belt routing guide to install the new belt around the other accessory pulleys. Leave the fan pulley for last.
10. Pivot the tensioner pulley counterclockwise, using the breaker bar and socket. Slide the belt over the top of the fan pulley. Release the tensioner--it will tighten the belt around the pulleys as it retracts. Remove the breaker bar and socket from the tensioner pulley and inspect the new belt to make sure that it is completely seated inside of each pulley.
11. Crank the vehicle's engine and allow it to run for approximately twenty seconds. Turn the engine off and recheck the belt to make sure that it stayed seated with the engine running.
12. Reinstall the plastic cover back over the fan and secure it by pushing the locking pins back in place, then close the hood.
