How to Tune the Audi

1. Open the hood and locate the throttle bore, which is made up of the air-intake plate and the tube that encloses it. In different Audi models, it will be in different places, though typically it is on top of the engine, near the back and easily accessible.
2. Scrub down your throttle bore with a cloth and a cleanser until it's clean. Alcohol works well for this task. Some Audis will have a throttle cable on the side that, when pulled, will open the air-intake plate and hold it there while you clean the inside.
3. Locate your spark plugs. Depending on the model of your Audi, you will have between four and eight spark plugs. Half will be on the left side near the bottom of the engine, the rest on the right in the same position.
4. Replace the spark plugs. The caps on each spark plug can be removed by hand with a twisting motion. Remove the spark plugs with a socket and ratchet by turning them counterclockwise. Visually inspect the new spark plugs. Utilize a gap tool to ensure they have the proper gap. Install the new plugs by turning them clockwise with the ratchet and socket. Plug new wires into the new plugs.
5. Follow the old, disconnected spark plug wires to the other end. In older models of Audi, they will lead you to the distributor cap. In new models, they will lead to the ignition module. If the car is a new model, unplug the old wires and plug in the new ones, then proceed to Step 10.
6. Replace the distributor cap if your Audi has one. The distributor cap is a conical piece of plastic on top of your engine. It's secured by two Phillips screws. Remove the screws and the cap but keep the old wires attached to the cap.
7. Remove the ignition rotor by removing the screw that secures it. Typically, it is a Phillips screw, but in some models, it will require an Allen wrench. The screw will be on the side of the rotor. Insert the new ignition rotor, then tighten the screw.
8. Put the new distributor cap into place over the rotor and screw it down.
9. Connect the new wires to the distributor cap. Using the old cap as a reference, install the new spark plug wires by pushing on the caps over the spark plugs and onto the distributor cap. It's vital that the wires go to the correct place in order to avoid having your Audi engine misfire.
10. Find the air filter cover. In an Audi, it will be on the left side, near the firewall.
11. Remove the air filter cover. In some models, it will be held on with two Phillips screws; in others, it will have plastic fasteners that can be pried up with a flat-head screwdriver. In either case, once the cover is loose, set it aside.
12. Pull out the old air filter, replace it with the new filter and replace the cover.
13. Jack up your Audi with a floor jack and slide a pair of jack stands into place.
14. Locate your fuel filter, which will be under your Audi, in front of the passenger-side rear wheel.
15. Replace the fuel filter. Unscrew the screws that secure it and pull out the fuel line. Push the fuel line into the new fuel filter and secure it with screws.
