How to Replace a Wheel Hub Assembly on a BMW 5281

1. Use a jack to lift the vehicle. Use a torque wrench or tire iron to loosen the lug nuts. Remove the wheel.
2. Locate the caliper bolts and use the ratchet and socket to remove them. Carefully pull off the caliper using a screwdriver. Then locate the caliper bridge bolts and remove them with the ratchet and a socket. If they are especially tight, use the breaking bar to loosen them.
3. Slide out the rotor. Separate the ABS wires connected to the wheel hub assembly. Use the breaking bar or spindle nut socket to remove the spindle nut and the washer behind it.
4. Loosen the wheel bearing assembly bolts, which are located behind the knuckle. Replace the socket on the ratchet and pull out the bolts.
5. Place the slide hammer on the lug studs and fasten down with the lug nuts. Move the drive shaft and spindle out of the way and sand off any rust and corrosion around the knuckle.
6. Reattach the backing plate and slide the assembly onto the knuckle. Manipulate the drive shaft spindle onto the center of the hub bearing. Push the bearing on as far as you can and replace the wheel bearing assembly bolts. Tighten each bolt until it is secure.
7. Reattach the washer and spindle nut. Reconnect the brakes in the same manner you removed them. If necessary, apply some pressure to the caliper piston with a C-clamp to make it fit over the rotor. Reattach the ABS lines. Then replace the tire and lug nuts, making sure to tighten to lug nuts sufficiently..
