How to Be a Dresser for Fashion Week

1. Research fashion week events in your target area. Learn who is sponsoring the event, which design houses are involved and locate nearby design colleges. People in the local community who are involved in fashion week year after year often play a role in placing volunteer personnel.
2. Scour the Internet for job openings or volunteer internships. You might find these on Craigslist or on design house websites. If you want to work at Miami's annual swimwear event named Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, you can apply directly on the fashion week website.State that you want to dress models or you could end up stuffing goodie bags. Make sure to include your credentials in your application. Being enrolled in fashion school or knowing how to use a needle and thread sets you apart from the crowd.
3. If you're in design school, contact your career office. Designers often get interns from universities. If you want to dress models for New York City's Fashion Week, being enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology can give you an inside advantage. Barbara Berman, one of FIT's faculty members, has placed students. She also runs BB's Backstage, a dressing company.
4. Contact the designer's PR firm to ask who's in charge of volunteers. Contact the volunteer coordinator with your resume.
