How do I Replace the Alternator on an Audi A6?


1. Open the engine compartment and disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the nut. Disconnect the alternator wires using a wrench to remove the nuts. Unplug the alternator wiring harness.
2. Turn the adjusting bolt counterclockwise using a socket and ratchet until the belt loosens enough to remove it. Pull the alternator belt off the alternator pulley.
3. Remove the mounting bolts from the alternator with a socket and ratchet. Pull the alternator out of the engine compartment.
4. Put the new alternator on the engine and tighten the bolts. Put the alternator belt on the alternator pulley and turn the adjusting bolt clockwise until the belt reaches the proper tension. The belt is at its proper tension when you are able to depress the longest span of the belt ¼ of an inch with your finger.
5. Connect the alternator wires and tighten the nuts with the wrench. Plug the alternator wiring harness in and reconnect the negative battery cable.
