How to Change the Oil on a Mercedes Diesel

1. Drain the oil from the Mercedes. If you are doing this at home, you will need to take an oil pan and lie underneath the car. If you have access to a car shop, you can put the car on a lift and use a stand up oil pan.
To drain the oil, use a socket wrench to remove the bolt on the side of the oil tank. The oil will drain out at a high pressure at first so put your pan to the right of the oil tank to catch the stream of oil. The oil will take about five minutes to completely drain.
2. Use a socket wrench to put the bolt back on the oil tank underneath the car. If you are using a car lift, you can lower the car now. The work underneath the car is finished.
3. Open the hood and remove the cap covering the fuel filter. There is one bolt on each side of the cap. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts. The fuel filter is located to the left of the windshield wiper fluid.
4.
Remove the old fuel filter and set it aside for recycling.
5.
Put in a new fuel filter. You will need to reference your Mercedes owner's manual to find out what type of fuel filter your diesel requires. You can buy the filter at an auto parts store or on the Internet. Just drop the fuel filter in the hole.
6.
Put the cap back over the fuel filter and screw the bolts on tightly using a socket wrench.
7.
Screw off the lid on the oil tank and put a funnel over the hole to the tank.
8.
Pour the oil into the funnel. Reference your Mercedes owner's manual to find out what type of oil and how much oil your diesel needs. You can use standard oil or synthetic. If you have a newer diesel it is good to use synthetic, but older diesels do not adjust to synthetic oil well. Do not pour in more than the required amount.
9. Screw the top back on the oil tank and check underneath the car to make sure no oil is leaking out of the tank.
10. Turn the car on and watch the oil pressure gauge. The gauge should go up to around 2 within 1 minute. If the oil pressure does not increase, the oil cap or bolt on the bottom are not tight enough.
