How to Replace the Oil Filter on a BMW

1. Locate the oil filter on the BMW's engine. It will either be on top of the engine near the front or under the engine.
2. Loosen the oil filter cover using the socket wrench and correct socket (size will depend on the make and model of your BMW and its engine size).
3. Remove the oil filter cover. Note that the oil filter itself will likely come out as well.
4. Throw away the old oil filter and rubber o-ring that were inside the oil filter cover.
5. Wipe off the inside of the oil filter cover with the rag or towel to remove any contaminants.
6. Lubricate the new o-ring that came with the BMW oil filter insert kit.
7. Install the new oil filter and lubricated o-ring in the opposite order they were removed. Install the new lubricated o-ring by pressing it into place, then install the new filter. Depending on the engine, the filter may be installed in two orientations or it may only have one correct orientation (if the latter is the case, it will not be possible to install it in the wrong orientation).
8. Install and tighten the oil filter cover using the socket wrench. If a torque wrench is available, torque the oil filter cover to 18 ft-lbs. If a torque wrench is not available, tighten until it is difficult to tighten further, but do not overtighten.
