How to Replace a 1996 BMW 328i Brake Light


Sedan, Coupe and Convertible Outer Brake Lights
1. Turn the knob counterclockwise 1/4 turn on the taillight cover in the trunk and pull the taillight cover off.
2. Twist the lower inner bulb socket counterclockwise 1/4 turn and remove it from the taillight assembly.
3. Push in and twist the brake-light bulb counterclockwise from the bulb socket and remove it.
4. Put on clean gloves and insert the new brake-light bulb, Sylvania part number 7506LL. Twist it to the right to lock it in place.
5. Stick the bulb socket back in the taillight assembly and twist it to the right 1/4 turn to secure it.
6. Place the taillight cover back on and twist the knob clockwise 1/4 turn. Remove your gloves.
7. Step on the brake pedal and have a friend tell you if the new bulb works.
Sedan and Coupe Center Brake Light
8. Open the trunk lid.
9. Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise 1/4 turn and remove it from the brake light housing directly under the brake light.
10. Push in and twist the brake-light bulb counterclockwise from the bulb socket and remove it.
11. Put on clean gloves and insert the new brake-light bulb. Twist it to the right to lock it in place.
12. Stick the bulb socket back in the brake light housing and twist it to the right 1/4 turn to secure it. Remove the gloves.
13. Step on the brake pedal and have a friend tell you if the new bulb works.
Convertible Center Brake Light
14. Open the trunk lid.
15. Remove the inner truck lid trim and disconnect the electrical connectors from the brake light.
16. Unscrew the four nuts holding the brake light assembly in the truck lid with the socket wrench and push it out from inside the trunk.
17. Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise 1/4 turn and remove it.
18. Push in and twist the brake-light bulb counterclockwise from the bulb socket and remove it.
19. Put on clean gloves and insert the new brake-light bulb. Twist it to the right to lock it in place.
20. Stick the bulb socket back in the assembly and twist it to the right 1/4 turn to secure it.
21. Insert the taillight assembly back into the trunk lid and secure it with the four nuts using the socket wrench.
22. Attach the electrical connectors and put the inner truck lid trim back on.
23. Remove your gloves. Step on the brake pedal and have a friend tell you if the new bulb works.
