How to Install a BMW Performance Clutch Kit

1. Disconnect the car battery to avoid any potential injury.
2. Jack the car up so that you can get at the undercarriage safely. A hydraulic lift is preferable if you have access to one.
3. Detach the BMW's exhaust system, driveshaft and shifter from the transmission.
4. Jack up a floor jack directly beneath the transmission to support it as you work.
5. Remove the slave cylinder from the side of the transmission, then disconnect the backup lamp switch and its harness before detaching the lower transmission support bar.
6. Unbolt the transmission itself from the engine block using Torx sockets ranging from E6 to E16. These sockets are necessary because the bolts themselves are very specialized and cannot be removed without them.
7. Detach the transmission from the engine, making sure that it is supported by the floor jack. It needs to stay balanced on the jack without slipping or falling.
8. Remove the bolts on the BMW's pressure plate and pull it away to reveal the flywheel. Then detach the flywheel bolts and pull the flywheel out with a wrench or breaker bar.
9. Disconnect the throw-out fork from the transmission and pull it free. Assemble the new pivot piece around it and make sure the parts are well-lubricated with grease.
10. Detach the bolts that connect the old bearing guide tube to the transmission and remove the tube to reveal the mainshaft seal.
11. Remove the seal and scour out the inside of the bore where it was held. Then install the new seal, making sure that it is fitted properly in place. You can tap it with a screwdriver to make sure it isn't crooked.
12. Grease the new bearing guide tube with white lithium grease and install it on top of the new mainshaft seal.
13. Connect the new throwout bearing on the throwout arm, and connect the arm to the transmission.
14. Remove the flywheel bearing from the crankshaft with a bearing puller and replace it with a new one. You can use a deep socket to tap it into place and make sure it is even.
15. Puncture the flywheel seal with a screwdriver and take it out.
16. Apply Curil-T to the new flywheel seal and fit it into place. Tap it carefully with an extension to make sure it isn't cocked.
17. Install the new flywheel onto the engine with a torque wrench and flywheel lock. If the old bolts are rusty, you may wish to replace them with new bolts at this time.
18. Install the clutch disc using a clutch alignment tool placed in the center of the pilot bearing.
19. Place the pressure plate on the flywheel, compressing the clutch disc in the process. Tighten the plate to the proper torque, and then remove the clutch alignment tool. The clutch disc, pilot bearing and pressure plate should all be aligned properly.
20. Reconnect the transmission to the engine, making sure it stays balanced on the jack the whole time.
21. Attach the Torx bolts to the transmission, double checking to make sure that it is properly secured.
22. Reconnect the backup lamp switch, the slave cylinder, the driveshaft and the exhaust system to the transmission.
23. Lower the BMW to the ground with the jack.
