How to Check the Transmission Fluid in a 1999 BMW

1. Park the BMW on a level area. Engage the emergency brake. Start the engine with the car in park or neutral. Run the car for 10 minutes to warm up the engine.
2. Open the hood. Be careful, because the engine is still running.
3. Locate the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) dipstick. It looks similar to the oil dipstick and is located toward the back of the engine block. It may be labeled, depending on your model.
4. Pull the transmission fluid dipstick from its tube. Wipe the length of the dipstick with a rag. The fluid should have a pink hue, and if the fluid is dirty, consider changing it. Locate the 'full' line at the end of the dipstick while it is clean.
5. Replace the dipstick, and push it in completely.
6. Remove the dipstick a second time. Note the level of fluid on the dipstick. If it at the 'full' line, replace the dipstick and close the hood. If it is slightly below the 'full' mark, add enough transmission fluid to bring the level up to the 'full' line. If the fluid level is well below the 'full' line, take your vehicle to a service center to check for transmission leaks.
