How to Buy a Classic BMW

1. Consider a 2002 built before 1974 - you'll get chrome bumpers and round taillights.
2. Seek out the 2002tii for a model that will perform great and hold its value over time.
3. Find a 1600, the predecessor to the 2002. It has a slightly smaller engine but similar performance.
4. Look for a 3.0CSi if you want the ultimate sports touring coupe. Built from 1971 to 1975, these cars are incredibly elegant and fast.
5. Understand that most BMWs have been driven hard. In particular, look for cooling problems - especially cracked and warped cylinder heads - and, of course, rust. Have a qualified BMW mechanic inspect any car you might wish to purchase.
