How to Tow a 1994 BMW 540

Using a Flatbed Tow Truck
1. Position the flatbed of the truck so that its rear is facing the front of the 540i.
2. Lower the flatbed of the truck, angling it down so that you will be able to pull the 540i up.
3. Screw the 540i's tow hook into the front bumper and attach the winch of the flatbed truck to the tow hook.
4. Place the car's transmission into neutral and ensure that the parking brake is disengaged.
5. Tighten the winch on the flatbed to mount the car. Attach the rear towing cable to the rear control arms of the 540i to secure it to the bed, then raise the flatbed back up so that it is horizontal.
Using a Car Carrier
6. Unroll the safety straps embedded into the side of the car carrier and pull out the ramps that are embedded into the rear of the trailer so that they are resting on the ground.
7. Drive the vehicle up on to the car carrier then turn it off, place the transmission into 'Park' or one of the gears if it's a manual transmission, and engage the parking brake.
8. Thread the side safety strap through your front wheels and ratchet the straps down to tighten them.
9. Thread the safety chains at the rear of the car through your 540i's rear subframe. Give the chains some slack to allow for movement caused by bumps in the road as the car is being transported.
