How to Replace the Side Marker Bulbs for a 2001 Mercedes

Front Side Marker
1. Open the hood and look at the rear of the headlight assembly that contains the failed marker light. Find the turn signal bulb socket on the top, outermost corner of the headlight assembly.
2. Turn the turn signal socket counterclockwise to unlock it and pull the socket and bulb from the headlight assembly.
3. Press down on the turn signal bulb and rotate it counterclockwise to unlock it. Lift the bulb from the socket, paying close attention to the positioning of the staggered metal tabs on the base of the bulb. You must position the new bulb’s tabs in the same manner.
4. Hold the new bulb with a clean, lint-free cloth to keep oils from your hand off the bulb. Align the base of the bulb with its socket and position the tabs on the base of the bulb in the same position as on the old bulb.
5. Guide the bulb into the socket, then press down on the bulb and rotate it clockwise to lock it into place.
6. Insert the socket and new bulb into the headlight assembly and twist the socket clockwise to lock it into place.
7. Close the C240’s hood.
Rear Side Marker
8. Open the C240’s trunk and fold the carpeting away from the rear of the taillight assembly that contains the failed side marker bulb, exposing the bulb carrier, a black electrical board.
9. Rotate the thumbscrew latch in the center of the bulb carrier so that it is vertical, which unlocks the bulb carrier.
10. Pull the bulb carrier away from the taillight assembly carefully to avoid breaking any bulbs.
11. Turn the bulb carrier so that the bulbs face you and find the rear marker light, which is the bulb in the lower, outermost corner of the bulb carrier.
12. Press the bulb downward and rotate it counterclockwise to unlock it. Pull the bulb from its socket, making a note of the position of the staggered tabs on the base of the bulb. You must install the new bulb with the tabs in the same position.
13. Hold the new bulb with a clean, lint-free cloth, as the oils from your hands may cause premature bulb failure. Guide the bulb into its socket, with the metal tabs on its base in the same position that the old light’s tabs were in. Press down on the bulb and twist it clockwise to lock it into place.
14. Guide the bulb carrier back into place on the taillight assembly and turn the thumbscrew latch to a horizontal position to lock it. Pull the carpeting back over the bulb carrier.
15. Close the trunk.
