How to Replace 1993 BMW 525i Head Gaskets

1. Lift up the hood of your BMW and remove the bolt clamp attached to the negative battery terminal with your wrench. Pull the negative cable away from the battery terminal.
2. Locate the drain plug on the radiator. The plug can be found at the very bottom of the radiator. Place a drain pan directly underneath the drain plug. Remove the plug and drain the coolant in to the pan.
3. Use your hands to remove the upper and lower radiator hoses, coolant lines and air intake hose from their connectors. Use a wrench to remove the bolts which fix the rear timing belt cover in place. Pull the cover away from the engine to gain access to the head gasket.
4. Use a flat head screwdriver to carefully pry the cylinder head away from the head gasket. Remove the mounting bolts which fix the head gasket in place using a wrench. Each bolt must be reinstalled in the exact same position from which it was removed.
5. Place the new head gasket on the engine block and fix in place with the mounting bolts. Reattach the cylinder head back on top of the gasket. Reconnect the radiator hoses, coolant line and air intake hose back in to their respective connectors.
6. Lift the cap off the radiator and pour coolant back inside. Place the negative cable back on the battery terminal and fix in place with the clamp bolt.
