How to Remove a Stripped Bolt From a BMW Transmission Pan

Lock Socket
1. Jack up the front of your BMW vehicle using a floor jack and support it safely on two jack stands.
2. Tap a 6 or 12-point deep socket over the head of the oil pan bolt you need to extract. The socket should have a diameter just slightly larger than the bolt head's to make a tight fit. Use a hammer to force the socket onto the bolt.
3. Unscrew the oil pan bolt by attaching a ratchet to the socket and turning the bolt counterclockwise.
4. Dislodge the damaged oil pan bolt from the socket using a pair of slip joint pliers.
Screw Extractor
5. Drill a small hole on the head of the stripped bolt or the surface of the bolt if the head has broken flush. The hole drilled should be just deep enough to let the tip of the extractor stud or screw to fit into the hole.
6.
Tap the tip of the square shank, screw extractor on the hole using a hammer or screw in the tip of the screw removal bit, depending on the type of extractor you have.
7.
Place a socket of the correct size on the extractor head, or use a pair of vise grips pliers, and turn the oil pan bolt free by turning the extractor counterclockwise. If you have the screw-in type extractor, turn the extractor counterclockwise to lock the thread on the tip of the extractor over the stripped bolt and force the bolt out as you keep turning the extractor counterclockwise.
8. Dislodge the stripped bolt from the extractor with a pair of slip joint pliers.
Thread Shell Removal
9. Select a drill bit with a diameter slightly smaller as the bolt's diameter you need to extract.
10. Drill a hole on the bolt deep enough to reach the tip of the stripped bolt.
11. Tap the bolt's thread shell remaining using a hammer and a punch or similar tool to extract the rest of the bolt. Just make sure not to damage the transmission threads.
12. Replace the stripped bolt with a new oil-pan bolt.
13. Lower the vehicle.
