How to Remove the Coil Pack in a VW

1. Pop the hood and locate the coil pack on the driver's side of the engine. This is a small black box with all of the spark plug wires leading into it.
2. Label each spark plug wire using the permanent marker and the masking tape. To do this, pair up each plug wire with each post on the coil pack, and label each pair with the same number. For example, the plug wire plugged into the top right post would be labeled "1," and the post would have a "1" label on it as well. It's not important which cylinder these plug wires actually control, just their location on the coil pack for re-installation. Repeat this process for every plug wire on the coil pack.
3. Pull off all of the spark plug wires using your hands by gripping at the base of the spark plug wire and tugging backward. Unclip the wiring harness leading into the coil pack by pushing on the tab in the middle using your thumb. Then use the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets to unbolt the coil pack from the motor.
