How to Clean a 1.8 T Throttle Body

1. Open the hood. Locate the throttle body, which is on the passenger's side of the engine bay toward the front of the car. The throttle body is the silver metal piece with an intake hose on one side.
2. Disconnect the wiring harness that plugs into the throttle body. Press a flat-head screwdriver against the center of the clip. You will hear a click when the harness is released. Pull the harness off of the throttle body.
3. Loosen the hose clamp on the hose that is fastened to the throttle body with a screwdriver. Pull the hose off of the throttle body.
4. Remove the four Allen bolts that hold the throttle body to the intake side of the engine with a Allen wrench. Depending on the model, these may also be star-shaped Torx bits. Withdraw the throttle body from the engine bay. Remove the gasket from the back of the throttle body, taking care not to damage it if you are not installing a new gasket.
5. Place the throttle body on a large towel and liberally spray carburetor cleaner all over the inside of the throttle body. Wipe the inside of the throttle body with a clean, lint-free rag.
6. Reinstall the throttle body with the four bolts that hold it in place. Use a new gasket between the throttle body and the engine if the gasket was torn or damaged in any way when the throttle body was removed.
7. Slide the throttle body hose back onto the throttle body. Tighten the hose clamp that holds the hose to the throttle body. Plug the wiring harness back into the throttle body.
