DIY Oil Change for a Mercedes A Class

1. Place a plastic oil receptacle beneath the oil-drain plug located at the back of the sump. The sump is beneath the engine block. Unscrew the oil-drain plug and allow the oil to drain into the plastic receptacle. Replace the oil-drain plug, tightening it firmly .
2. Remove the oil filter casing, which is located behind the engine and to the left. You may need a socket extension to reach the nut. Once the casing is removed, pull the old filter free. Push the new filter into the oil filter housing, rub some oil on the gasket of the filter casing and screw it in.
3. Pop the hood and find the oil fill cap which is on the top of the engine block. It can be removed with your fingers. Pour three quarts of oil into the engine. The mouth is wide enough to pour the oil straight in, but it may be necessary to use a funnel.
4. Find the oil dipstick and pull it free. Wipe it clean with a rag and reinsert it. Pull it free once again and check the oil level. Continue to pour oil into the engine 1/2 quart at a time, until the oil level has reached the full line.
5. Start the car and allow it to run for five minutes so that the oil can circulate through the engine block. Check the oil dipstick once more, topping off as necessary.

How to Check Mercedes Car Histories

1. Ask the seller to give you the vehicle identification number (VIN.) The placement of digits in a VIN gives valuable information about the Mercedes you wish to check up on.
2. Search the history by entering the VIN on a site such as Car Fax, Auto Check or the AA (see Resources.) Using the VIN, you can find the country of origin, date of birth, body style, engine type and many other details of the car. There may be a fee relating to this service depending on which site you use.
3. Talk to the seller and make sure they outline the history of the Mercedes you are buying. It is important that you ask if the car has been in any accidents or if there have been any recurring problems. The seller is the person in the best position to flesh out the history of the car.
4. Find a Mercedes mechanic using a site such as Benz Shop (see Resources.) This will provide you with information about mechanics in your area who are experts specifically on Mercedes cars. They can inspect your car, look for examples of past accidents, faulty repairs or other problems, and perhaps help you to piece together any missing history.
