How to Troubleshoot the BMW DSC System

1. Check the connection speed sensors located on each wheel hub. Locate them by following any wiring coming out of the wheel hub and following it until you've found the sensor. Check if the sensor is dirty or if its wiring has frayed or become disconnected somehow.
2. Check the brake components of your BMW by inspecting the rotors and brake pads that are on each corner of the car. If the pads are unevenly worn, your rotors are worn down (indicated by scratch-like marks on the surface of the rotor), or if the brakes are not functioning as well as they normally do, the DSC could be malfunctioning due to an issue with the braking system.
3. Check the adjustment sensors such as the steering angle sensor, lateral acceleration sensor, and pressure sensor by bringing the BMW to a licensed mechanic or BMW dealership. Using electronic diagnostic equipment, they can run tests on your DSC system to determine if any of the three aforementioned sensors are failing, and thus causing the issues with DSC.

How to Replace a Hood Ornament

1. Open the hood of your car. Check underneath to see if there is a bolt holding the ornament to the hood.
2. If bolted to the hood, use pliers to loosen the bolt. You often only need to turn the bolt 90 degrees to get it to release.
3. Close the hood. Use a plastic scraper to gently pry the hood emblem up a little. Use a towel underneath the scraper to protect the car's paint.
4. Once you have gotten an edge of the ornament up a little, take some dental floss, and using a sawing motion, separate the hood ornament from the glue.
5. Clean off any leftover adhesive residue on the hood.
6. Replace with your new hood ornament. If the ornament has an adhesive backing, remove the paper and position into place. If the ornament is attached by a bolt, open the hood of the car, put the ornament in place, and tighten the bolt with pliers.

How to Get Better Mileage in a BMW X5 4.4

1. Use cruise control to set your car's speed, with a maximum of approximately 65 miles per hour. Gas mileage typically decreases the faster you drive.
2. Reduce any excess weight that you might have in your car. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the miles per gallon fuel consumption of your car decreases by 2 percent for every extra 100 pounds in the vehicle.
3. Keep your engine properly tuned. Change your spark plugs and fuel filter every 30,000 miles, in addition to changing your X5's oil at 3,000- to 5,000-mile intervals. A dirty fuel filter and bad spark plugs can cause the engine to misfire and burn more fuel than necessary. Additionally, regularly clean your air filter to ensure that the engine's recommended air-to-fuel ratio is retained.
4. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, according to the inflation specifications printed on the rear door sills of your X5. The inflation specs can vary depending on the laden weight of your vehicle.

How to Replace a CAT Converter

1. Use a jack to raise the car up. Place two jacks on the front and two on the back. Ensure the car is stabilized by using jack stands with the jack support points.
2. Lubricate both the bolts and clamps so they will be easier to remove. Loosen the bolts with an adjustable wrench, since bolt sizes vary. Remove the bolts and put them somewhere safe.
3. Remove the heat shield and clamps. Shake the catalytic converter slightly and pull it from the pipes. In some occurrences, you may need to use a rubber mallet and tap on the converter to release it.
4. Check the connecting pipes for damage. If you see damage, you might need to replace the pipes, while a small crack or puncture can be replaced with an exhaust patch kit you can purchase at an automotive store.
5. Attach the new converter to the exhaust pipe that comes from the front of the vehicle. You may need to use the rubber mallet to ensure that the converter is securely fastened. Align the exhaust pipe from the vehicle's rear with the catalytic converter's back hole. It may require pushing the pipe back to get it fixed. When it is properly aligned, push the pipe one inch into the converter.
6. Put the heat plate back on, if you removed one, then replace and secure the bolts. Come out from under the car then start the engine. See if the new converter is leaking. Most leaks occur where the exhaust pipes meet the converter. Should you see a leak, you will need to use the automotive exhaust patch kit to patch it up.
7. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle. Write the date of the replacement in your auto maintenance manual. Some states, like California, require this information with auto inspections.
8. Check to see your state's requirements for disposing of catalytic converters. Some states require you to take it to an approved location for disposal. You can find this by contacting a local auto store or mechanic.

How to Change the Alternator Belt on a BMW 316I

1. Park the BMW 316I in a safe and level work area. Pull the hood latch and open the hood.
2. Inspect the top of the radiator for the serpentine belt routing diagram. This diagram on the BMW 316I model cars can be found on the plastic cover that is on top of the radiator or on the underside of the hood near the front.
3. Inspect the front of the engine for the serpentine belt tensioning device. This device will have a pulley on one end and a round shaped spring loaded tensioner on the other end. Use the 3/8 inch square hole on the spring loaded arm to turn the whole tensioning device.
4. Insert the square end of the 3/8-inch serpentine belt removal tool in to the 3/8 inch square hole on the tensioning device. Turn the tensioning device counter clockwise to loosen the belt. Then remove the belt from one of the top accessory pulleys with your other hand.
5. Pull the serpentine belt off of the other accessory pulleys. Then route the serpentine belt around the fan blades and out of the engine area.
6. Route the new serpentine belt around the fan blades and onto the crankshaft pulley. Then follow the directions on the serpentine belt routing diagram for routing the new belt around the remaining pulleys. Leave one of the top accessory pulleys for last.
7. Turn the tensioning device counter clockwise again with the belt removal tool. Then, slide the new belt onto the top pulley with your other hand. Release the tensioning device and pull the tool out of the square hole.
8. Inspect the new serpentine belt to ensure that it has been routed around the pulleys correctly. Also inspect the belt to ensure that it is completely inside of the pulleys.
9. Crank the BMW 316I up and let it run for about one minute to completely seat the new belt inside of the grooves on all of the accessory pulleys. Then, turn the engine off.
