How to Replace the Wheel Bearings on a BMW E46

1. Raise the car with the floor jack and support it on jack stands. Remove the wheel at the corner where you are replacing the wheel bearing; set it aside. Remove the two caliper retaining bolts with a 16-mm socket. These are located on the back of the caliper, on the top and bottom facing the wheel well. Slide the caliper off the rotor. Support it with a piece of wire tied to a suspension piece, so that it doesn’t damage the soft brake line.
2. Remove the brake disc retaining bolt with a hex wrench. Pull the rotor straight off the hub and set it aside. Use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry off the hub cover. Using a hammer and a screwdriver, tap the bent-in part of the hub nut back out to prevent the hub nut from unthreading.
3. Use a 46-mm socket and the impact gun to remove the hub nut. Use the hub press tool or the slide hammer to remove the hub and bearing by fastening it to the hub and pressing it off. If the inner wheel bearing race is still on the car, use a small puller to remove it.
4. Remove the inner seal cover with a thin punch by tapping the seal cover out. Clean the spindle and nearby areas with a clean rag. With a 10-mm deep socket remove the three bolts that hold the rear brake cover. Clean the cover and nearby areas, including the rear seal cover and the ABS sensor. Reinstall and tighten the bolts for the rear brake cover.
5. Press the new wheel bearing in by tapping its outer edge with a 36-mm socket and a dead blow hammer. Tap it in carefully, ensuring that is installed straight. Install and tighten the wheel bearing nut with a torque wrench to 214 lb/ft. Use a punch or screwdriver to tap the outer part of the hub nut back down to prevent the nut from unthreading.
6. Apply a thin film of anti-seize compound to the hub surface, where the rotor mounts. Reinstall the disc and the disc retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 12 lb/ft. Reinstall the caliper and the caliper bolts. Tighten the caliper bolts to 81 lb/ft with a torque wrench. Reinstall the hub cover by tapping it on. Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground.

How to Decode the VIN Number on a Pre

1. Identify the first six numbers. This is the chassis type.
2. Locate the seventh number. If it is a '1,' your Mercedes is made for left-hand driving. A '2' means it is for right-hand driving, which are vehicles primarily shipped to the United Kingdom and other countries where the driver sits on the right side of the car and drives on the left side of the road.
3. Identify the eighth number. A '0' represents a standard transmission, a '1' is a hydraulic clutch and a '2' is a manual transmission.

How to Import a Mercedes From the US to Canada

1. Contact the RIV with the year, make and model of the Mercedes to determine admissibility and whether or not any modifications to the vehicle are required prior to import. Also ask if your vehicle is considered a high emissions vehicle. High emissions vehicles warrant additional fees.
2. Contact a U.S. customs office 72 hours prior to the date of export. Verify the documents needed at the time of export and their office's hours to ensure they will be open when you intend to cross. There are multiple U.S. customs offices, and the office you select depends on the state where you will be crossing the U.S./Canadian border.
3. Arrange to pay import fees and duties online via the RIV website or by mailing payment. Payment can also be made at the time of border crossing via check, cash, debit or credit card.
4. Fax required information to the U.S. customs office for their review 72 hours prior to arrival at the border. Please note that the 72 hours should not include Saturday or Sunday. Follow up with a phone call to ensure your documents are sufficient.
5. Drive the Mercedes to the U.S. border office to which you faxed your documents. Show your driver's license and passport. Also, ensure that you have the originals of the faxed documents. If all goes well, you will be released to Canadian Customs.
6. Proceed to Canadian Customs. They will review your paperwork and ask you to fill out Vehicle Import Form 1.
7. Pay all required fees, if you have not already done so. If all goes well, Canadian Customs will stamp your paperwork and release you.
8. Watch your mail. Within 10 days, Canadian Customs will mail Form 2. This form is for federal inspection. This document will outline any required vehicle modifications such as speedometer conversions or daytime running lights.
9. Take the Mercedes to a Canadian Tire location of your choice, along with Form 1 and 2, and all other vehicle paperwork. Canadian Tire will inspect your vehicle, free of charge, as per the RIV program. If your vehicle passes inspection, Canadian Tire will complete Form 2 and place a sticker on your vehicle that indicates that it is Canadian Safety compliant.
10. Take the Mercedes to Provincial Vehicle Licensing, along with all of the vehicle paperwork, to get the vehicle registered. You will be notified of the provincial sales tax and can pay it at this time.
