How to Reset the Windshield Wipers

1. Remove the plastic cover between the hood and the windshield that hides the wiper motors and arms. The cover is held in place with clips. Insert a pry tool, such as a standard screwdriver behind the cover and gently twist to pop it out of place. Set the cover aside.
2. Use a socket wrench to remove the nut located at the center of the wiper motor. This nut connects the arm linkage to the motor. Turn the wipers on, then back off, so the motor completes a full cycle and returns to the correct park position. The blades will not move since the linkage has been disconnected.
3. Position the wiper blades in the correct park position. They should rest horizontal and parallel to the windshield. Push the wiper linkage back onto the motor and replace the nut. Tightly secure it with the socket wrench.
4. Turn the wipers on to test them. They should sweep the windshield as normal, then return to the park position at the bottom of the windshield. Replace the plastic wiper cover by pressing it into position until the clips snap back in.

How to Test Drive a BMW 525

1. Test drive the vehicle when the engine is cold, if possible. While it idles, get out and look at the exhaust pipe. White smoke should not come out of the exhaust pipe. If you see white smoke, there is something amiss with the engine.
2. Drive the car on a bumpy stretch of road, if possible. The suspension should feel stable, and the shocks should not bounce excessively. Vague steering and an overly-soft suspension may mean that shocks need to be replaced, which can be a costly job. On the freeway, the car should track straight, even if you take your hands off the wheel. If the car wanders, the alignment may be bad, or bushings in the suspension may be worn out and needing replacement.
3. Apply the brakes and pay attention to how the car behaves. The brake pedal should not pulse or vibrate, and the pedal should feel firm. If the pedal vibrates and shakes, the brakes may need to be replaced.
4. Drive the BMW on a variety of roads, including city streets with slow traffic, faster freeway driving, as well as a winding road, if possible. This will give you a better idea of whether you like the way the car performs. Generally, BMWs are sporty cars and thus feel different than driving a comparable car from a different company such as Lexus, for example.
5. Inspect the car as part of the test drive. Open and close all doors, trunk and hood to make sure everything operates as it should. Also, check all electronic features (air conditioning, power windows, sunroof, etc.) to verify that these systems work. Closely inspect the paint and body for defects or signs of collision damage.

How to Clean a Transmission Filter

1. Disassemble the filter, noting how it is put together so you can reassemble it in the correct order. Use a bench grinder to cut the crimps that hold the clamshell-like transmission filter together. Hold the bench grinder perpendicular to the filter and run it along its perimeter to separate the seam.
2. Drill through the mounting hole crimps with a drill bit to separate the two halves.
3. Hold the filter pieces over a pan and spray them with disc brake cleaner to clean them. The dirt and particles will drip off into the pan. Anything that is still stuck to the filter pieces can be dislodged with a toothbrush. Be careful not to damage the brass parts with the toothbrush.
4. File the rough outer edges of the filter pieces.
5. Reassemble the pieces together in the correct order and put new crimping metal in place with crimpers.
