How to Overboost APR Stage 3 for an A4

1. Open your A4's hood and locate the diverter valve next to the rectangular plastic air box in the driver's side corner of the engine compartment. The diverter valve is plastic and approximately 3 inches long, attached to the hosing that is also connected to the air box.
2. Pull the hosing out of both ends of the air box and replace the factory diverter valve with the N75 diverter valve, which is a larger unit used on different Audi models.
3. Insert the hosing that was connected to the factory diverter valve firmly into the N75 valve then close your hood. The larger diverter valve will facilitate the travel of additional boost pressure, thereby 'overboosting' the Stage 3 on your A4.

My BMW Car Cranks But Won#039;t Start

1. Remove the spark plugs from the engine. Consult your service manual for exact instructions on how to do this for your engine and year model. Clean and dry the spark plugs if they are wet with fuel, and reinstall them.
2. Remove a spark plug wire from a spark plug. Insert a small screwdriver into the end of the plug wire and hold it close (within an inch) to the engine. Have a helper try to start the engine. If a bright strong spark is not present during cranking the problem is most likely in the ignition system. Remove the coil wire from the ignition coil located on the passenger side fender well. Have the helper crank the engine over while you hold the coil wire close to the coil. A strong spark should be present. If the spark is present at the coil but not at the spark plug, replace the distributor cap and rotor located on the front of the engine. If no spark is present, replace the crankshaft position sensor located on the bottom front of the engine behind the crankshaft pulley.
3. Remove the air cleaner, and any associated ducting, to gain access to the throttle body. Spray a liberal amount of carburetor cleaner into the throttle body. Try to start the engine. If the engine starts momentarily and then stalls, the problem is in the fuel system.Locate the fuel pump relay. It is located on the side of the under-hood fuse block, grouped with several other relays. The fuel pump relay is the one that is farthest away from the firewall. Unplug the relay from its electrical connector. The BMW uses a standard Bosche style relay. Two of the four wires attached to the connector will be large gauge wires that supply power to the fuel pump. The remaining two are smaller gauge and are the control circuit that turns on the relay. Connect the two large wires together with another piece of wire. Try to start the engine. If it starts and runs, use the circuit tester to verify if one of the remaining wires has power and the other remaining wire has ground. If this is the case, replace the relay. If not, replace the crankshaft position sensor. If, after connecting the two power wires together the engine still doesn't start, replace the fuel pump.
4. Remove the bolts that attach the timing cover to the front of the engine. Pull back the timing cover and have a helper crank the engine. If the timing belt is broken, the engine will spin over, but the timing belt will not move. If the timing belt doesn't turn the camshaft, the ignition system will not function either.Another telltale sign of a broken timing belt is the sound the engine makes during cranking. When the belt is broken, a wiring sound is made by the engine instead of the rhythmic sound it normally makes. If the timing belt is found to be broken, make the necessary repairs and retest the systems. The engines in BMW cars are interference engines, and if the timing belt breaks, the valves in the cylinder head will be damaged.

How to Tune a BMW E36 323I

Performance Air Intake
1. Open the hood of the 323i and locate the air filter box and intake tube. These factory parts should be removed and replaced once a year, but changing with aftermarket, wire-mesh designed filters can improve power and eliminate the need for constant replacement.
2. Unhook the air filter box and disconnect from the air intake of the engine. Keep all fastening hardware together for use with new installation. Remove the air filter from the box slowly.
3. Clean the area inside the filter box and intake tub leading out of the box. This area must remain clean for proper air intake.
4. Lower the new air filter into position and secure with provided hardware. Aftermarket filters are designed to fit specific automobile applications, so the 323i replacement filter fits snugly into position just as the old one rested.
5. Close the lid of the filter box and snap back into place.
Brake Pads
6. Set the parking brake and loosen the lug nuts of each wheel. Jack the front end of the E36 up and place jack stands behind each front wheel. Do the same for the rear of the vehicle. Release the parking brake once securely set on blocks. Continue loosening lug nuts of both front wheels and remove the wheels completely.
7. Loosen the upper and lower caliper bolts with the necessary ratchet. Push these caliper bolts through the bushing until they fall from the brake itself.
8. Use the handle of a screwdriver or other hard surface to push the caliper piston back into the caliper, allowing for thicker brake pads to be installed. Thicker brake pads allow for better grip and quicker response when braking.
9. Remove the bolts that hold the old brake pads in place. Slide the old brake pads out of place and keep the hanging hardware for new installation.
10. Lubricate the back of the plate where the new brake pad will rest before installation. Position the new brake pads into place and secure with the provided bolts and hardware. Tighten the caliper to secure brake system. Repeat for each wheel.
Oil and Oil Filter
11. Place an oil recycling container underneath the oil pan of your 323i. Remove the oil drain plug, located on the side of the oil pan.
12. Remove the oil filler cap on the engine's block to allow oil to drain more quickly from the engine's oil compartment. Replace the drain plug when finished. Dispose of old oil in a proper manner.
13. Unscrew the oil filter and housing unit from the engine, located on the top-side of the 323i's engine. Remove the filter from the housing unit and clean the unit thoroughly. Replace all washers and O-ring hardware. Install the new filter into place and hand-screw the new filter and housing unit back into position.
14. Add 6L of motor oil to the engine's oil compartment. Check the dipstick for accurate level measurements and more oil if necessary.
15. Jack the front end of the 323i off of the jack stands, remove and lower to the ground. Repeat for rear end.

How to Remove a BMW Emblem

1. Slide the credit card under the edge of the BMW emblem. This isn't so much to remove the emblem as it is to avoid scratching the car while you remove it.
2. Slide a thin flat-head screwdriver under the emblem but over the credit card. Push the screwdriver in as far as it can fit. You may need to gently hammer the screwdriver into place.
3. Pry the screwdriver up carefully. As the emblem begins to pull up push the driver down closer to the middle of the logo.
4. Continue to pry up until the emblem pops up off the car.

How to Translate a VIN Number

1. Find the VIN. While seated on the driver's side of the vehicle, open the door and look at the inside door jam. You will see a sticker with information, including a combination of 17 letters and numerals. This is the vehicle identification number. Or, look on the upper side of the dashboard on the driver's side. In this case, the VIN is seen more easily from outside the vehicle. Write down this number for research.
2. Examine the first three characters. These are the World Manufacturer Identifier. The first character, which can be a letter or a number, tells the vehicle's country of origin. A '1,' '4' or a '5' means the vehicle was built in the United States; a '2' means it was built in Canada; '3' means Mexico. Japan is 'J' and Germany is 'W.' Italy is 'Z.' The second character tells you the vehicle's manufacturer. 'A' is Audi, 'B' is BMW, 'L' is Lincoln. Saturn is '8.' The third character tells you the make of the vehicle.
3. Examine the next six characters, the Vehicle Descriptor Section. Five characters identify vehicle features such as engine size and body style. The sixth is a 'check digit,'' designed to identify if the VIN itself is fraudulent. It is based on a complicated mathematical formula developed by the Department of Transportation.
4. Examine characters 10 through 17, the Vehicle Identification Section. The 10th character identifies the model year. The years 1981 through 2000 are represented by letters B through Y, omitting I, O, Q and U. The year 1981 is B; 2000 is Y. The years 2001 through 2009 are numbers 1 through 9. The year 2010 starts with the alphabet again with A. The 11th character identifies the plant where the vehicle was manufactured. Characters 12 through 17 make up the number assigned to the vehicle as it came off the plant's assembly line.
