How to Import an Audi A3 to Canada From the United States

1. Verify that your Audi A3 remains admissible into Canada by contacting the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) at 1-888-848-8240. Only some models of S6 and A6 wagons are inadmissible, but this could change at any time, so verify your specific make, model and year.
2. Use your potential car's VIN to discover its branding history. If there has previously been an accident serious enough to result in an insurance write-off or nonrepairable status, you may not be able to license the car in Canada.
3. Research the Transport Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to determine if your vehicle requires any modifications to comply. Also see if any exemptions apply to your vehicle.
4. Obtain your retail clearance documentation and submit it to the RIV (by e-mail, fax or mail) as soon as you buy your vehicle. This documentation (usually a letter) will verify that the manufacturer has no outstanding recalls associated with the car. Contact Audi of America at 1-800-822-2834 to obtain this documentation.
5. Notify the U.S. Customs and Border Protection of your intended export of the vehicle at least 72 hours prior to export. Contact your intended port of crossing directly in order to find out exactly what you need to submit and how to do so. Usually this involves faxing the certificate of title to the border agency at your point of crossing, and you will need to get the physical title stamped at the border upon crossing.
6. Arrange all of your documentation for inspection prior to arriving at your Canadian port of entry. The Canadian Border Services Agency will check your documents (including bill of sale and U.S. Customs-stamped certificate of title), verify vehicle admissibility and process your Vehicle Import Form as well as payment (unless your vehicle is exempt).
7. Bring an official vehicle inspection form, and your vehicle, to an authorized RIV inspection center for completion. After you have paid your registration fee, submitted your Vehicle Import Form and confirmed your recall clearance, you will receive this vehicle inspection form.
8. Contact your Canadian licensing authority upon completion of the RIV inspection to determine how to properly license your vehicle.

How to Unlock a Transmission

1. Turn the vehicle off and take your foot off the brake. Turn the key to 'IGN' and depress the brake firmly, listen for a clicking sound from the brake shift interlock solenoid. This component 'tells' the car the brake is engaged and the transmission can be shifted into gear.
2. Shut the engine off. Take your foot off the brake again. Turn the ignition to 'ACC.' Depress the brake firmly. Try to shift the car into 'Neutral,' then start the car. Attempt to shift the transmission into 'Drive.' Listen again for the solenoid click. If you do not hear the click, the fuse may be out; go to the next step.
3. Retrieve your vehicle's owner's manual. Open your vehicle's fuse box. Find the fuse going to the brake shift interlock solenoid using the owner's manual as your guide. Replace the fuse. If you cannot replace the fuse, find the override lever under the dash. This is usually an orange or red lever that will manually disengage the locking mechanism. With your foot on the brake, press the override lever toward the front of the vehicle, then shift the car into gear.
